How does taurine work?
Our mitochondria underlie our health at the most fundamental level.
There are a few ways that taurine improves our mitochondrial function:
1. tRNA
Our mitochondria have their own DNA, and thus require a component for their use - known as tRNA.
Taurine is a component of mitochondrial tRNAs, which allows the creation of our energy producing mitochondrial proteins.
2. Oxidative stress
Oxidative stress from free radicals not only directly damage our mitochondria but also are a signal for them to stop churning out energy.
Taurine acts as an antioxidant by improving mitochondrial function, which gives a positive feedback loop to continue churning out energy.
3. Calcium regulation
High levels of calcium flooding mitochondria is a good way to ruin how they function.
Taurine acts as a buffer for excess calcium, ensuring our mitochondria don't get overwhelmed and shut down.

Taurine as a neurotransmitter.
Taurine prevents the excess excitability in tissues, essentially calming them down.
Excess excitation in the brain is common in things like seizures, anxiety, or just feeling scattered.
In the heart or blood vessels, this can cause problems with contraction and relaxation.
Taurine activates both the glycine and GABA receptors, opposing this excitation.

Supplementing taurine:
Doses in these studies range from a few hundred to a few thousand milligrams.
I think starting at ~500 mg and seeing how you feel is a good start.
This is the taurine product we use, and have been loving it: lifegivingstore.com/store/ajinomot…

Taurine is awesome, but it probably won't be enough to truly achieve your health goals.
