People are NOT fat because they eat too much and move too little.

Here's the proof that we've been lied to (and something much bigger is going on):

Average calories (US):

1909: 3,500
1990: 3,500

yet, obesity increased by ~5X during that time.

People will often only show these numbers from 1960-2000 where calories increase as obesity does.

That fails to take into account much more.

3
Americans also WASTE more food than ever.

This means that the number of calories available for consumption (reflected above and below) is actually an overestimate, since more is being thrown away and not eaten.

4
Average calories (US):

2000: 3750
2018: 3750

yet, obesity continued to increase rapidly.

5
Americans have been exercising more over the last 2 decades.

Yet, obesity continues to increase.

6
In the UK, calorie supply has remained steady since the late 1960s.

Obesity continues to shoot up in prevalence.

7
In the UK, calorie consumption has DECREASED since the 1950s,

while obesity has tripled.

8
In Japan, calorie supply has DECREASED since the mid 1990s,

while obesity has tripled.

9
In Australia, calorie supply remained steady from the 1970s to 2010,

yet, obesity more than doubled.

In the Netherlands in the 80s,

research showed that top 25% fattest people actually ate 300-400 calories FEWER than the bottom 25%.

Their food intake was tracked by scientists.
Media image
11
They also showed that while people got fatter from ages 40-70,

they also progressively ate less food.

12
Obesity peaks in middle age,

yet calorie consumption peaks in youth.

It's commonly said that people who are obese underreport how much they eat.

This is true.

The study where this originates did show that obese people underreported food intake more than lean people.

BUT they STILL ate less when actually measured.
Media image
14
This has been seen time and time again.

Here, it was shown that obese adolescents eat ~400 calories fewer than their lean counterparts.
Media image
15
The same was shown for high school girls,

obese girls ate MUCH less than their lean classmates.
Media image
16
More recent research backs this up too.

Here, it was shown that obese adolescents eat less than their normal weight classmates.

This was assessed by directly weighing food.

17
No difference in calorie intake between the obese and normal weight adults.

Measured, not reported.

Obesity is less common in the wealthy,

yet the wealthy eat more, and have less physically demanding jobs.

As I addressed above, we exercise more.

Even when accounting for less movement at work (down ~100 cal since 1960), things still don't add up.

Adding 100-200 cal per day in exercise does not move the needle for weight loss x.com/Outdoctrinatio…

I addressed here multiple examples of older populations eating a lot, even when not moving much, and remaining lean.

So what is going on? Well, a lot, to be sure.

Obesity should be thought of as a syndrome rather than just a mass balance. The biochemical mechanisms are extensively studied.

I covered some of it below, and will have more content out on the topic soon.
