A tiny habit that can make a huge difference:

Pausing.

Just a fraction of a moment.

Before speaking, to digest what you heard & your internal response to it.

Before action, to notice the intention that gave rise to it.

1 conscious breath to move from conditioning to choice🧵

When things get tense or heated in conflict, we often lose awareness of our self to a degree.

Knee-jerk reflexes that once protected us, but now don't really serve us.

But if in daily life, you practice pausing before reacting to things, that becomes your new reflex over time↓
3
When you train yourself to pause for a fraction of a second as a default response to everything, you greatly increase your agency.

E.g.
Pause after reading this post.

Do you wish to read on or not?

Practice this, and it'll become your default response to any post. Agency ↓↓

Once you're used to pausing as your default response, you can increase the power of your pause by adding these things:

- Notice bodily sensations
- Center your physical balance
- Take an extra breath if needed
- Grip the ground with your feet + sink your weight into your legs ↓
5
If before responding to stimuli, you not only pause, but use the pause to feel as much of yourself as you can, you greatly increase not just agency but self-connection.

Do this throughout the day in various context, and you'll notice your default actions become more aligned ↓

A common pitfall when practicing the habit to pause:

If the ego identifies as spiritual, it might latch on to the newfound presence/agency & make sure everyone knows.

Hijacking the sacred pause & turn it into the "performative pause" (usually with a loud exhale)
↓
7
The problem with the ego-driven "performative pause" —for the person who pauses— is that it:

- Decreases presence & attunement
- Is usually paired with the story "I'm so present and attuned"
- Decreases agency & self-connection because it needs the pause to look a certain way ↓
8
To summarize:

1. Pausing = good. Pausing more = life more good.

2. Practice pausing before responding = it'll become the default response.

3. You can increase agency & self-connection by feeling more of yourself while pausing.

4. Watch out for the ego not to hijack the pause.
