Passenger: “Excuse me. That woman has been holding the same baby...

Me (Flight Attendant): “Is there a problem, sir?”
Passenger: “I think she’s traveling with somebody else’s child.”
I glanced toward the window seats.
A woman in her late twenties was holding a sleeping baby against her chest. She looked exhausted.
Me: “Ma’am, is everything okay?”
Woman: “Yes. Is someone complaining about me?”
Me: “I’m just checking on you.”
She adjusted the baby’s blanket.
Woman: “Please don’t call anyone.”
That caught my attention.
Me: “Why would I need to call anyone?”
Woman: “Because he’ll tell you I’m lying.”
The man immediately stood up.
Man: “She’s not the mother. I’m the father.”
Woman: “You haven’t seen this child in eleven months.”
Several passengers turned to look.
Me: “Sir, please lower your voice and take your seat.”
Man: “I’m not sitting down until you give me my son.”
The woman started crying.
Woman: “You signed the papers. You said you didn’t want anything to do with him.”
Man: “I never signed anything!”
I asked both passengers to remain calm while I alerted the appropriate crew member. I wasn’t going to decide who was telling the truth based on an argument in the aisle.
Then the woman reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.
Woman: “Here. Read it.”
The man stared at the paper.
His expression changed.
Man: “Where did you get that?”
He sat down without another word.
I thought the argument was over.
Then the man looked at me and said something I wasn’t expecting.
Man: “Ma’am, please check the baby’s hospital bracelet.”
I looked at the child’s wrist.
The name printed on it wasn’t the name either adult had been using.
