My husband booked us a weekend away for our 15th anniversary.

I thought it was romantic.

He even picked the same little town where we’d spent our honeymoon.

Everything was perfect until we checked into the hotel.

The woman at the front desk looked at my husband strangely.

Then she looked at me.

She asked whether we were celebrating our anniversary.

I smiled and said yes.

She congratulated us.

Then she accidentally said something that made my husband go pale.

She said, “I remember you from last time.”

I assumed she’d confused him with someone else.

My husband laughed and said she probably had.

But she kept looking at him.

Eventually, she apologized and went back to work.

I didn’t think much of it until we got upstairs.

My husband asked me not to go downstairs again.

That was when I knew something was wrong.

He finally admitted he’d stayed at that hotel alone three years earlier.

He said he’d needed space after an argument we’d had.

I asked him why he’d lied about it.

He said because nothing happened.

I believed him.

Until that evening.

Someone knocked on our hotel door.

It was a woman.

She looked at my husband and immediately started crying.

Then she looked at me.

She said she’d been waiting three years for him to tell me.

I asked her what she meant.

She looked at my husband and said:

“You never told your wife about our daughter.”

I thought she was talking about an affair.

She wasn’t.

The child was his.

But the reason he’d kept her secret was much worse.

He hadn’t been cheating on me.

He’d been secretly paying this woman because three years earlier, he’d discovered that our marriage certificate wasn’t valid.

And he’d been trying to fix it without telling me.
