Market Learning - PowerPlay Setup by Mark Minervini The most...

The most misunderstood momentum setup in Indian markets
Most traders know Power Play by name,
but very few understand how it actually behaves in India.
Here is a step-by-step breakdown
with rules, numbers, and Indian market reality With Chart Example and Scanner
Let's Go
👇 👇 👇 👇 👇
Every Power Play starts with exceptional strength.
Typical traits:
• Fast upside move
• Clear momentum
• Strong demand
Usually a 20%–50%+ rally in a short time.
No strong first leg = no Power Play.
A true Power Play gives back very little.
• Ideal pullback: 5%–10%
• Acceptable (rare): up to 15%
• More than this → setup breaks
Strong stocks don’t need deep corrections.
Power Play consolidations are short.
• Usually 8–10 trading days
• Sometimes 2–3 weeks
• Long, dragged-out bases = NOT Power Play
This setup corrects time, not price.
Inside a valid Power Play:
• Candles become small
• Range stays tight
• Higher lows or flat structure forms
• Price holds near 10/20 EMA
This shows sellers are exhausted.
Volume tells the truth.
• Volume expands during the first rally
• Volume contracts during consolidation
• No heavy sell-volume days
Supply disappears quickly in leaders.
Power Play works because:
• Weak hands exit early
• Institutions hold tightly
• Demand returns faster than supply
The next leg often comes fast and sharp.
Power Play is NOT a normal base.
• Much shorter in time
• Much tighter in range
• No deep pullbacks
If volatility expands,
it’s no longer a Power Play.
Entry comes:
• After consolidation
• On breakout above consolidation high
• With fresh volume expansion
Never chase the first leg.
The edge is in the pause.
Power Play was popularised by Mark Minervini
in US markets, which have:
• No circuit limits
• No price caps
• Free price discovery
That’s why US Power Plays can run 200%–500%.
Indian markets have:
• Circuit filters
• ASM / GSM rules
• Liquidity constraints
Because of this:
• Moves get interrupted
• Expect 40%–80%, sometimes 100% moves
• Continuous 200%+ runs are rare
Structure remains valid —
expectations must change.
For Indian traders:
• Follow the same structure
• Respect shallow pullbacks
• Focus on fast continuation legs
• Manage profits actively
Power Play in India is about precision, not patience.
The setup fails if:
• Pullback exceeds 15%
• Consolidation becomes wide or choppy
• Volume expands on down days
• Time correction drags too long
Strong momentum does not behave this way.
Power Play teaches one lesson:
True leaders don’t rest much.
If a stock explodes
and then refuses to fall —
that pause is information.
To find Power Play setups consistently,
I’ve created a Chartink scanner based on the same rules:
• Strong momentum stocks
• Shallow pullbacks
• Tight consolidation
• Structure suitable for continuation
This scanner helps narrow down leaders,
so you focus only on stocks where Power Play behavior is visible.
