🧵 YouTube video length is useless. Everyone tells you to upload...

But the truth is, YouTube doesn’t care about any of that, YouTube only cares about whether your video length matches your audience’s rhythm of consumption.
Your focus should be to match the rhythm of consumption of your target audience within your videos.
When you match rhythm, viewers feel like your content fits seamlessly into their day.
On the flip side, if you’re aiming at hardcore finance nerds who want in-depth tutorials and you drop a 4 minute shallow summary, they’ll feel cheated.
Both videos could be good, but if the rhythm doesn't match, the video just won't do well.
So once again, video length is not important, rhythm is.
Audit the last 20 uploads from the top 3–5 channels in your niche and write down:
> Average runtime across their videos
> How their runtimes compare to yours
> Which runtimes consistently perform best
For example if you’re in finance and the top 3 channels average 12–15 minutes per upload, but you’ve been doing 5-minute uploads, you’re fighting the trained rhythm of that audience.
Go to Analytics → Audience → Device type and break it down:
> If you have majority mobile viewers, they’re watching probably on buses, in bed, between classes. Shorter videos align the best with this rhythm.
> If you have majority desktop or TV audiences, these viewers are in sit-down mode, more willing to consume long videos.
Testing rhythm doesn’t mean randomly uploading one short video and one long one, that's not proper testing. Instead:
1. Pick a topic that already performs well for you.
2. Create three variations: a short version, an version and a long version.
3. Release them in close succession (within a few weeks)
4. Compare the analytics
This test tells you whether your audience prefers short rhythm (stacked sessions), long rhythm (deep dives), or a mix.
Try to test it multiple times a year just to recalibrate.
Go to Analytics → Audience → When Your Viewers Are Online
If your viewers are online mainly around lunchtime, short rhythm is better because they probably have other things to back to. If they spike in the evening, long rhythm is better.
But note that there's a lot of nuance to this, it majorly depends on the demographics of your audience and longevity of your videos.
