Eh, I am sorry but my family survived the Holocaust, then we survived the Bosnian Genocide and yet nobody from my country has had the inkling of an idea to go and forcibly displace other humans and to commit genocide. Trauma is an excuse that I am simply over hearing about. x.com/drrupamarya/st…

There has been no revenge killings in Bosnia and Herzegovina following the Bosnian Genocide. Not even against those same people we know committed horrific atrocities and acts of genocide to our loved ones. I am a deeply traumatised person and yet I’ve never felt the urge to kill.

Not only did we survive the genocide but for the last 30 years on a near weekly basis we have had to listen to threats of another war, threats of another genocide. Yet you do not see us going out and killing people?

I’m supposed to believe that someone who has lived a privileged life, their entire life, is somehow more traumatised than I am, a person who actively lived through war and genocide, because their grandparents or great-grandparents survived the Holocaust.

Why does their trauma get to matter more than mine? In fact, why does their trauma get to matter more than the 75 years of occupation, forcible displacement, and genocide that the Palestinians have endured.

Yes, they’re humans and humans are capable of evil. But it is a choice. I chose every day not to be a genocidal maniac and to be a good person. I do not spend my every day trying to use my trauma as an excuse for all of my poor behaviour. We are not hardwired to hate and kill.

They could have chosen otherwise. They could have chosen to settle in Palestine and live side by side with the Palestinians in Palestine…but at every opportunity both Israel and its citizens have chosen hatred, displacement, and genocide.
