There was war in my city. There was a literal genocide and there was nowhere for us to go and we got shelled on, bombed, shot at snipers every day because there was nowhere to go.

& thousands and thousands of people were killed BECAUSE THERE WAS NOWHERE TO GO. No escape.

Honestly, the way Westerners really think that war is just like their movies and the good guys will always win and get away is an astounding example of their privilege.

They can’t grasp the fact that over 2 million people live in Gaza, which is very, very small.

Over 2 million people live in Gaza, which is about the size of Detroit, the city which has a population of only 620,000. It is not a country, it is a very small, densely populated area. They cannot escape. You people need to grow up, honestly. This isn’t your summer blockbuster.

My family & friends lived in Hrasno/Grbavica at the time of the war. It was one of the areas that quickly was taken over entirely by the Serb forces. It was horrifying & escaping it meant getting shot at and killed. At one point, some ran to Dolac Malta, across the bridge.
5
That meant that on a regular basis there would be 20-30 of us in a single apartment in Dolac Malta, where my grandmother lived. & next to that apt…there was a Serb sniper, which directly shot at me when I was only 5 years old. Because we thought it’d be safer.

There is no “safe zone” in wars. There’s no way to run and escape when the perpetrators are dead set on killing as many of you as possible. When they see a child and treat it as a hostile threat. When they’re set on your genocide….there is no way to escape that.
7
Srebrenica is the best example of this. A “safe area” set up by the UN, telling all the refugees of all the surrounding towns & villages to come to the Safe Area where they would be protected by the UN. 20,000 people in an open air concentration camp, all handed over to the Serbs
8
For weeks & months prior to the establishment of the Safe Area in Srebrenica, people were being killed in the surrounding towns & villages by Serb forces. Their entire villages burnt down & destroyed…so they went to the safe area hoping they’d survive and be safe.
9
& in that safe area, they crammed thousands and thousands of people who were all starving & thirsty, who had lost everything…and instead of protecting them, the UN members drank with the Serb leadership and then handed them over for slaughter.
10
In just days…over 8,000 people were brutally massacred. Some of it was filmed. The perpetrators proudly boasted as they entered the safe area of how they’d come to take revenge against the “Turks” which is what they’d call us to dehumanise us & pretend our land wasn’t ours.

Please stop trying to make excuses for perpetrators of genocide when you have not a single clue of how wars function and how safety is a privilege that people in Gaza can only dream about. A privilege they have not had for over 75 years.
