Last night I spoke to a Palestinian friend…she’s been displaced for 3 decades now but her family is still in Palestine. We cried and cried and cried. My heart broke for her. & she called b/c “you’ll understand, you’ll know” so ofc I picked up.

Around the anniversary of the Bosnian genocide, I often call her too because “she’ll understand, she’ll know”. And it’s nice to have each other…but god it hurts finding similarities between our lives. The way war, conflict, ethnic cleansing connects us. It really is brutal.

And there’s millions of us out there. People who have had to live under siege, with no access to war & electricity, with constant bombings & destruction of our homes. & i cannot help but wonder how some people get to live their entire lives in peace, never experiencing our lives.

And I’m just jealous. Truly envious of the Brits and the Americans and all the others who get to live their cushy lives, not understanding what it means to fear for your life constantly and not understanding that even in times of peace…all you think about is war.

Anyway, we cried for hours. She’s deleted her social media because she couldn’t handle seeing people cheer killing on. She couldn’t handle seeing the genocidal rhetoric of people asking Israel to fully destroy them. She had a panic attack and then called me. Her voice shook.
