YouTubers, you're probably not reading data in your analytics correctly.

Here are 7 biases you're blind to:

I have been contacted by people working at YouTube to provide my feedback on the analytics, but before I do detailed feedback (soon), let's start with a quick overview of how reading your analytics can fool you.
3
Throughout most of history, humans have evolved to make quick decisions with limited information.

While beneficial in survival scenarios, it becomes problematic in our modern context, especially when interpreting data where a more careful & analytical approach is required.

1. WYSIATI (What You See Is All There Is)

You can't consider what you don't know.

This bias is the tendency to rely only on the immediately available information (what's in the analytics) without considering all possible information outside of it (like market dynamics).

Our brain will always choose confidence over doubt and seeing only a part of the whole picture (strangely enough) will increase our confidence of being right.
6
2 Anchoring Bias

Relying too heavily on the first piece of information encountered (CTR/AVD) and ignoring other factors.

3. Narrative bias

The tendency to turn complex realities into simplified stories.

The human brain hates randomness but loves stories because the cause-and-effect relationships are counter-intuitive in randomness.

Relying on false stories will lead you to the wrong conclusions.

4. Fooled by randomness

The illusion that patterns are observed in purely random occurrences, leading (again) to the wrong conclusions.

It's the tendency to interpret random events or luck as something meaningful, systematic, or caused by skill.

5. Selection Bias

Looking at data selectively, focusing on certain metrics/pieces of data that confirm a preconceived belief without considering all other relevant factors.

10
6. Recency Bias

Overvaluing the latest events.

Oftentimes, it leads to reactive content instead of following a well-thought-out strategy, which is damaging in the long run.
