In my previous thread I shared some of the best fiction books for copywriters.

Now let’s look at some of the best songs for copywriters.

And songs are important because...

They tell stories...

They evoke emotion...

And they paint vivid imagery...

Using few words.

Which is a key skill for copywriting.

As the fewer words you can get your message across in, the more impact it'll have.

So let’s get started...

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

Takes you on a journey...

Story, imagery, emotion, this song has it all.

5
The Gambler by Kenny Rogers

This could almost be a template for the story-based emails that are so popular now.

A simple and effective piece of storytelling.

6
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

Not only does it show how great writing can take you to a different world.

It also makes it clear you don’t need to bound by the rules as it jumps from genre to genre.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman

This packs a lot of meaning into not a lot of words.

Simple and at the same time emotional and relatable.

8
Piano Man by Billy Joel

A wonderful piece of bittersweet storytelling.

It does a great job of bringing its subject to life.

9
Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf

I could have picked most of Meat Loaf’s songs that were written by Jim Steinman.

Though I went for this one because it’s such an easy story to visualise.

It Was a Very Good Year by Frank Sinatra

A textbook example of minimalist storytelling and emotion.

It uses few words, but paints a rich picture.

A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash

Not all songs have to be sad or romantic, sometimes they can be funny.

And this is an excellent example of lighthearted storytelling.

(Not the best audio quality, but it’s a great performance.)

Summer Wine by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood

A perfect example of using rich imagery to enhance the storytelling.

Hazlewood’s a master at this and you can’t go wrong with most of his work.

Common People by Pulp

A Britpop classic.

Tells a great story and you can feel the anger as the song gets increasingly intense.

The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band

A great hook, catchy writing, and fun imagery.

This has been one of my favourites since I first heard it on the radio as a child.

Hope you enjoyed my choices.

Though they barely scratch the surface of what’s out there.

Other great picks include most of the Bond themes.
