After my wife died, my daughter Lily became my whole world. Her...

One October evening, the girls went for their usual walk. Only Grace came back.
Her clothes were muddy, and she was shaking.
“Where’s Lily?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” she whispered.
The police searched for weeks, but Lily was never found. People blamed Grace. Even my own brother warned me not to trust her.
But I saw a frightened child who had lost her best friend. So, despite the criticism, I became her legal guardian.
For ten years, Grace never spoke about that night. Every year, on Lily’s birthday, she placed a white flower on her bed.
Then one rainy evening, she came home looking terrified.
“Dad, I can’t hide it anymore. Everything you believe about Lily’s disappearance is a lie.”
Before I could respond, she opened the front door.
A woman stood outside, older, thinner, but wearing the same small silver necklace Lily had worn the night she disappeared.
“Lily?” I whispered.
She began to cry.
Grace took my hand. “I found her that night, Dad. She was hurt, and she begged me not to tell anyone. She said someone in our family had threatened her. I helped her get away, and we kept in touch secretly. I was afraid that if I told you, you’d be in danger too.”
Lily stepped forward and showed me the letters she’d written over the years. She had finally agreed to come home after learning the person she feared could no longer hurt her.
I pulled my daughter into my arms and held her as tightly as I could.
For ten years, I had mourned a child I thought I’d lost forever.
And the girl everyone accused of taking her away had been the one who kept my hope alive.
