Imagine double identity WWX where he's a normal college student by...

all is well until one day WWX gets an assignment to kidnap his bestfriend, LWJ
WWX is gritting his teeth even before he finishes reading the email.
What makes it worse is that he doesn't know who the contractor is. He gets all his proposals through an intermediary.
In the meantime, he works on finding the original contractor first, while simultaneously making sure LWJ isn't out of his line of sight for more than a few seconds.
Wei Ying sticks to him during all of their shared classes and walks him to the ones they don't share. He's even started picking him up in the morning and dropping him home everyday.
What happened? What changed? What are they? Does it mean the same to Wei Ying as it does to Lan Zhan? Can they do more? 👉👈
LWJ would perhaps question it if he weren't too distracted by WWX's crotch in his face.
While LWJ doesn't mind, he'd also like WWX to do more than just... hover, y'know? He sits so close to him when they have lunch behind the their favourite tree. Can he not just sit in his lap? 😔
He's staring at Wen Xu instead, narrow eyed, as if trying to connect some dots. Like staring hard enough will do that.
LWJ shrugs. Wen Xu has a record of being unpleasant but he's not important enough to remember how often he bothers him. Anyway, Lan Zhan would like it more if WWX could bring his attention back to him, tyvm.
LWJ does hear. He would respond too if he weren't busy getting a raging boner.
Mmhmm, LWJ thinks. Is this an love? It has to be, right? It must be. Wei Ying is clearly jealous. Unnecessarily so. It's kinda hot tho. Lan Zhan didn't even know WWX had a possessive side to him.
He blinks. WWX is poking on his forehead now. "Are you listening or not?"
LWJ clears his throat. Sweeps his eyelashes up. Licks his lips. Then trails his index finger along the curve of WWX's chest. "Whatever you say."
One of WWX's eyebrows goes up.
Stalling couldn't go on forever so he had ended up accepting the assignment. Because he needed to find out who the contractor was.
If his suspicion has any credibility, things would get confirmed soon.
Sure enough, it happens. Wen Xu shows up minutes later. No wonder he hired someone on the outside instead of using his own people.
WWX returns home and reports his first failed mission, returning all the money he had been transferred.
The danger is inevitably going to be a thousand times worse now as the assignment would inevitably go to someone else... someone not WWX.
Which means doing this has also consequently put a real target on LWJ's back.
Somewhere, WWX knows the only way out is telling LWJ the truth. Not just LWJ but also his brother and uncle. No one can protect him better than them.
It doesn't matter though. Not if it's a question of LWJ's safety.
But losing his bestfriend is worth it if it will keep Lan Zhan breathing.
"I made it myself," he says. "For you, Wei Ying."
WWX frowns, and promptly finds himself tongue tied, his chest doing something weird.
WWX is so surprised not a word escapes him.
If he's being completely honest, LWJ has been... rather strange lately.
He's admittedly—WWX swallows—a lot cuter than he used to be.
He simply cannot afford that. Losing his bestfriend is gonna be enough of a heartbreak as it is. He cannot knowingly make it worse.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be in WWX's hands.
Even the smallest things set him on edge. He begins finding threats even in places there are none.
More than once, he has seen LWJ being summoned to LQR's study though LWJ himself says nothing about it.
Just not in the way WWX could have predicted.
They're at the city fair when WWX spots Wen Xu coming in with several of his lackeys. Under any circumstance, it will be two against many.
WWX acts before he can think. He drags LWJ away far into the back of an abandoned, half-hidden fabric stall and practically stuffs him into the corner, completely hiding him with his own body.
He swallows. "....Lan Zhan"
LWJ's eyelashes sweep up, and there's a molten quality to his eyes. They're almost luminous. "What?"
In response, LWJ's hands move over WWX's which are on his shoulders, and he quietly brings them down and wraps them over his waist. Before WWX can utter even a word, he closes the distance and captures his mouth.
He's frozen as LWJ's lips begin to move against him, soft and sweet and supple, his tongue teasing & testing.
He doesn't know what he's doing.
Surely, there are other ways to shield LWJ.
One of LWJ's knees inserts between WWX's thighs, and WWX's arms wind around his neck engulfing him in.
Down below, LWJ gives his lower lip a bite and his eyes close right back, surrendering fully to the rhythm of the tongue now moving in tandem with his own.
Though LWJ isn't much bothered by it. When he stumbles, he simply sways into WWX and stuffs his face into the crook of his neck and whispers, "Hold me a little, Wei Ying."
He stands a little stunned, gently patting LWJ's head as the boy breathes & pecks the skin of WWX's neck.
He's in trouble.
He's in So. Much. Trouble.
Just... what has he done?
Surely, there were many ways to go about this that didn't involve sucking face with his bestfriend. When did he start seeing LWJ like that?
A million questions turn in his head for days thereafter. With no convincing answers.
Or even when WWX's own body pushes him on a tree uncaring of the bruises his teeth inflict on the pale skin of LWJ's neck.
WWX tells himself he'll figure it out tomorrow. That he won't let things get out of his hands. That there's no way he's in too deep to turn back. That he cannot allow a physical need to weaken him like this.
His tomorrows never come.
He's not entirely aware of the extent how deep his affections run until one fine day his fears come to stare into his face and the worst comes to pass.
LWJ. Parking. Bleeding. LWJ.
He hears only bits and pieces, before WWX is rushing out, static in his ears and the worst possible scenarios in his head.
WWX's surroundings are so out of focus that it takes a while before he registers that LWJ is actually has Wen Xu pinned by the throat on a wall, his face blank with anger.
"Lan Zhan..." WWX asks, and his voice emerges wheezy.
But LWJ's glare is hard on Wen Xu instead. "Talk to me again and I will rip your tongue out."
"What happened?" He asks quietly. Willing his eyes to not water because LWJ has no idea just how much worse he has turned everything for himself.
LWJ doesn't say more, and WWX doesn't have to ask to know how much an inappropriate touch must repulse someone who's wary of even regular ones.
Slowly, WWX turns towards Wen Xu.
He's still holding his neck with both hands, though his face is curled into an ugly sneer, eyes cold and derisive.
"Rip my tongue out, huh?" he chuckles. "You would have rather liked having it elsewhere, Wangji. But too bad you won't anymore."
Within, something seems to click. Days of conflict has blipped out all of a sudden. He feels nothing but calm.
LWJ lays his head on WWX's shoulder and breathes, rubbing a circle on his wrist. "I'm alright. I promise."
He doesn't understand why LWJ is reassuring him when he's the one who needs it.
Objectively, WWX knows what are going to be the consequences of LWJ's action. He's seen it happen way too often. And yet, all he feels is... light. As if he's been given the one token he had been waiting for.
"One last chance," they say, "Don't mess up again.
LWJ's picture on it is the same as before. Just as pretty. The only difference being, WWX's task isn't a kidnapping anymore. It's elimination.
How very predictable.
When you have too much money to burn, you can even buy revenge. And nothing says revenge like, 'If I can't have something, nobody will."
He doesn't fully understand. But he won't deny the rush he had felt when LWJ ever so casually referred to him as that.
But now it was personal. Now, he was going to enjoy it. Wen Xu wouldn't know what hit him.
Keeping him alive was always going to come at the cost of losing him. Better this way than another. Atleast this way, LWJ's safety will be ensured forever. Atleast this way, WWX can say that he ruined himself for love.
WWX: if I die for Lan Zhan, atleast it'll be worth it.
LWJ: *is in the process of coining their third baby's name* ]
Not this though.
Huh.
The humiliation must have really burnt through Wen Xu. Desperation is practically oozing of his request.
"Why do you mean?" LWJ is predictably incensed. "It's our first date."
That's not true. It's their third date. But LWJ refuses to count the first two because they weren't perfect.
His eyes dart over to the maroon shirt LWJ gifted him especially for tonight, and he swallows. He really wanted it to be perfect.
What if he ends up scaring LWJ?
His only hope would be that LWJ never finds out who he is or what he did.
He blinks. "Uhh, no no. I'm here. "
"Then what is it? Are you too busy for me?" LWJ sounds grumbly now. "Are you uninterested? Am I boring you, Wei Ying?"
WWX frowns. Checks the line. Is this truly Lan Zhan?
"Do not Lan Zhan me," LWJ cuts him off. Both of WWX's eyebrows shoot up. "Why are you unavailable tonight?"
It catches him off-guard. He's not used to LWJ prying like this. "Ahh, I just... have to... study for that test."
He's cringing even before it's out.
It's like not having WWX was his only line. And now that he has him, he's uncontainable. It's as thrilling as it's scary.
WWX sits up straighter. "What do you mean?"
Another long bout of silence, and another sigh. "Wei Ying, you know I'm only yours, right?"
A slow crease appears between WWX's brows. ".....What?"
Well, he cannot deny that. Wen Xu's words have hardly left his mind. /You'd have liked having my tongue elsewhere. But now you won't./
The bastard had already decided.
On the phone, LWJ says, "Wei Ying. I know how you feel. But you don't have to. You are the only one for me."
WWX squints at the floor. "...ookay?"
WWX is scratching his head now. He has no idea which piece of this conversation he missed and desperately searches for it.
"Lan Zhan," he tries. Almost afraid. "I really can't... tonight."
Ominous eerie silence.
LWJ hangs up.
WWX stares at the phone. Wow. He has not a lick of idea just what went on in that conversation. And he's scared to ask now lest LWJ flip out again.
LWJ: I know you're jealous possessive & territorial my sexy pookie but you don't have to be 😔 your sweetipie is really truly and /only/ yours pls don't cancel on me
WWX:
Unfortunately, WWX doesn't have that time at hand. He has a job to do.
He's glad it's first claim would be someone deserving of it.
————
But it does wake him up. Wakes him up before his phone rings.
"Still mad at me?"
LWJ's eyes drift to the clock. It shows 3:37 am.
"Do I not have a reason to be?"
There's something pressing on LWJ's chest. Instinct? Intuition? Just a bad feeling due to waking up at an odd time? He doesn't know. But listening to WWX's voice helps.
"I had a bad dream."
"I don't remember," LWJ answers.
WWX hums. "Maybe that's better. Bad dreams are better forgotten."
Somehow, LWJ doesn't like that. It makes him uneasy. "What do you mean? Are you home? Are you alright?"
LWJ finds himself tongue tied. He doesn't respond. Cannot bring himself to.
"Aiyah, you're always on me for something or the other and now you won't say it back?"
He feels his jaw tense. Takes another sip of water and it does nothing to loosen his throat.
"I will say it when I see you next."
"Goodnight, Wei Ying."
"Wait," the urgency in WWX's voice gives him a pause. "Please."
He doesn't like it. Doesn't like it one bit. "No."
He's trying to be playful, LWJ can tell. Try to make a joke out of it. And yet, the crack in WWX's voice tells a different story.
"Then I suppose you don't have a choice."
He hangs up before Wei Ying can say anything more.
There's no reason they're true. It doesn't make sense. Wei Ying loves him. LWJ knows he does. Knows in deep in his bones & flesh & sinews. It doesn't make sense.
As a result, he's fully awake and nursing a ginger tea when LXC knocks and rushes in.
"Wangji, did you hear?"
"Wen Xu," his brother says. "He's dead."
He doesn't breathe. Somehow, it's not WWX's last words that emerge in his head this time. But rather the cold blank look that was there on his face that day.
LXC looks troubled as he nods. "He did have many enemies."
"Assassination?"
His brother shakes his head. "It wasn't a professional. They're saying his tongue is missing."
"I would say it was personal," LXC goes on. "Maybe he pissed someone off."
For no comprehensible reason yet again, all LWJ can think of is the way WWX's eyes, clouded with worry one moment, had settled on a pitiless certainty the next.
LXC nods, clearly in awareness of wen xu's infamous personality. "I told you so you'd be prepared. There might be an inquiry on us too considering the altercation between you two. But leave that to uncle and me."
And yet, before LXC steps out, he finds himself speaking.
The sudden shift in topic catches LXC off-guard. But if there's one thing LWJ knows, it's that the little brother he's seen pining for over 2 years will always take priority for LXC. That's just the kind of person his brother is.
He takes another sip. "Last night."
LXC's eyebrows shoot up. "You went out last night?"
LWJ shakes his head. "I snuck Wei Ying in. He left in the morning."
He nods again. "All night."
Unfortunately, LWJ has no choice but to count on giving Shufu a near heart attack.
LWJ takes the last sip. "It's alright, Ge. I understand. Wei Ying will understand too."
LXC gives him one more smile and leaves.
LWJ becomes one of the people being the most thoroughly looked into, because he's one who had very recently, very publically, outright threatened Wen Xu.
Anything to justify that a threat like that isn't exactly unusual.
Given Wen Xu's infamous personality in contrast to LWJ's own, it isn't exactly a difficult tide to turn. Even WRH himself isn't much interested in them.
That's the whole reason LWJ included himself in the scenario. WWX wouldn't keep out of trouble unless he knew opening his mouth could potentially get LWJ into major trouble.
Three days of distress because he doesn't get to see Wei Ying either. True to his words, WWX truly doesn't contact him.
Initially, he wonders if he'll have to pull something dramatic. Land in a hospital or something so WWX would have no choice but to burst in through the door.
WWX appears himself. The day his interrogation gets dismissed because he's already "accounted for" without him having to say a word.
Because LQR, though it killed him, had to safeguard his nephew on all fronts. Even if one of the fronts was called Wei Wuxian.
/WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?/
And because LWJ is petty and has been through hell & back without listening to his beloved's voice, he replies:
/Infirmary. Fell down the stairs and hit my head on the concrete./
LWJ guilelessly stares back. "It sure feels like it."
With a disgruntled sigh, WWX grabs his hand and leads them out.
LWJ doesn't make it easy for him. He simply perches on the bench and stares. The kind that he knows makes people nervous.
"Y'know," his voice emerges rather thin. Trembling. "When people find out their boyfriend is a psycho killer, their response isn't usually to create a false alibi for him."
LWJ's hands fall in his lap. "So you did kill Wen Xu."
He blinks slowly. "Why did you say I might not see you again?"
WWX pauses where he's pacing the ground infront of LWJ. "How is that important right now? Are you hearing yourself? Who even are you?"
WWX bristles too. "You did it first."
His voice rises a decibel. "Why did you say that, Wei Ying?"
"Because I'm a bad person," WWX bursts out, his voice splintered. Soft. "Has that occurred to you?"
WWX's hands fall to his sides. His eyes hard now. "Do you even know who I am?"
"Do I need to?" LWJ asks.
"I can snap this without mercy."
LWJ stares up. Then angles his face such that his jugular is right under WWX's thumb. "Go ahead."
LWJ's head tilts. "Was that the reason?"
WWX laughs darkly. "Will you ever ask the right questions?"
"Ask me who I am," says WWX. "Perhaps be a little afraid."
LWJ leans forward—WWX's hand still on his throat—until he can feel his breath.
"Afraid of you?"
"Mhmm."
"How do I be afraid of someone who loves me to the point of murder?"
WWX doesn't respond to the kiss either. But he doesn't push him away. He remains still.
When that doesn't work, LWJ slides off the bench and pushes WWX into it. He climbs into his lap and sticks his knees on either side. The he cups his face, tilts it up, and kisses him again.
"You don't know who I am."
LWJ's mouth latches on his jaw instead. "Then enlighten me. Go ahead."
LWJ pushes him back with a thud. "Don't you decide for me. I have known you for 3 years and loved you for 2 of them. I promise you, I can be worse."
That earns him a glare, follow by a resigned sigh.
LWJ racks his brain, and turns out, yes he has. One of his eyebrows goes up. "You are the one who busted Jin Guangshan's prostituition racket?"
WWX blinks. Then he rolls his eyes. "Wow, that's a rather colourful assessment of it."
LWJ scrutinizes him. "Did you not know that was going to happen?"
WWX scoffs. "Does that matter?"
"It does."
To his surprise, LWJ huffs. "Oh I remember that. You forced Da-ge to finally get rid of that outdated technology."
LWJ's shoulders rise and fall. "He's a billionaire. He'll live."
His teeth bare. "And now I've killed someone."
"I know," LWJ's face is blank but his eyes shine. Intense. "You killed someone for me."
"Brother said his tongue was missing," says LWJ, so close he's practically speaking onto WWX's lips. "He said it was personal. Did you cut his tongue out because he wanted to harm me, Wei Ying?"
WWX turns his face away. LWJ turns it back with a his fingers.
LWJ shifts back a little. Frowning. "Really?"
"OHMYGOD," WWX's face is in his hand now. "You're even worse than me. How did I ever think you were just a good uptight boy?"
It elicits a laugh out of WWX, which he quickly masks, muttering. "Dear god, what have I created."
"Shufu's biggest nightmare," LWJ quips.
This time when WWX laughs, he doesn't contain it.
His boyfriend is breathing easy now. A little more relaxed. So LWJ doesn't let the conversation go. "Did he now?"
WWX takes in a deep breath. "I killed Wen Xu because it was personal, it's true."
"But cutting his tongue was to make it look unprofessional. So my handlers wouldn't suspect."
LWJ tilts his head. "You're a genius, no surprises there. But you could have cut off something else then. Maybe a finger."
He finishes his ramble breathing and blinking at him. Positively stunned.
LWJ shrugs. "Being rich comes with perks."
"Yeah, and having a rich a boyfriend even more so, apparently."
His boyfriend groans. "You're crazy, you know that, right?"
"Only for you," he says. And then kisses him.
WWX's fingers submerge into his hair and yank his face back. "What if this isn't the last time? What if I'm gonna do it again?"
WWX's fingers on the back of his head spasm. For a moment, he only stares, wide eyed. Then all of a sudden, he pulls him in and captures his mouth.
LWJ hums. WWX's hand settles at the base of his neck.
WWX's fingers are moving between his ear to hair. It's terribly distracting. Hard to focus. LWJ answers nevertheless.
"Not unless you kill me about it. And even then, I'll leave you an alibi before I die."
LWJ presses his mouth hard near his ear. "That's only half true. You've also brought the best out of me. Maybe you've simply brought the most out of me."
He's still pondering when WWX pops his top two buttons open and licks the arch of his clavicle.
"I know, right? He shouldn't have made that comment." WWX stuffs his face into his neck and places a sweet breathy kiss under his ear. "Karma's a bitch."
And a year later, when they'll move in together, this exposure therapy would have long resigned LQR to this grim fate.
~the end.
