College best-friends #wangxian on a trip to Cloud Recesses — a...

WWX, whose plan was to explore the ruins of burial mounds, doesn't like it one bit.
Spending his bday at an ancient library? NO.
"BM & dinner with the group," he says, mutinously shaking a test tube in the lab, "and a movie, just you and me."
"But it's ruined now," he whines plopping his head in LWJ's lap at lunch.
Wei Ying grins, looking up at his face. "Why are you the best?"
"Because I seem to have no other choice when you sulk," says Lan Zhan, & Wei Ying laughs, finally.
The library has some really cool texts on ancient magic.
WWX pouts when he's disallowed from touching a scary looking book displaying a particularly bad handwriting.
"Who the heck lived in this place?" He asks sniggering, "did they even follow all that?
And even attempts to pluck the strings of an ancient guqin displayed in a glass case.
"Looks like we're liking it here," he teases.
"Not at all," WWX bristles, embarrassed, "the only thing good about today is that I came to Gusu with you."
Exploring it makes WWX like the place even more, much to his indignation.
They find living quarters, dining halls, classrooms, & a ridiculously pretty cold spring.
Finding the door locked, they loiter in the garden, walking, talking, joking until they find a gift wrapped box with... /Dear, Wei Ying/ written on top of it.
They look at it bewildered, shocked, and very very creeped out.
"Wei Ying…," says Lan Zhan, unsure, "I don't think you should touch that."
Wei Ying huffs, eyes twinkling. "You already know I will."
WWX unwraps it to reveal a metal box, old and no less creepy. "What even is this?"
"A time capsule?"
WWX cackles. "Who tf makes a time capsule this creepy?"
"Someone not-very-nice," Lan Zhan answers gravely.
The first to come out is a jar with what smells like alcohol inside.
WWX immediately attempts to take a sip. Lan Zhan intercepts once more.
"Aiyaah, fine fine ," WWX keeps the jar aside, chuckling.
Next is a white ribbon, with beautiful cloud motifs sewn on it.
Then there's a guan, a lotus hairpin, and a pair of tassels – one blue and one red.
The last thing they find in it is a scroll, bound with a red ribbon.
The same ribbon.
He immediately shoves everything back into the box and kicks it away.
"We're leaving," he declares.
"Yes," WWX insists. "It may be dangerous."
"It wasn't dangerous till you alone were involved," says Lan Zhan, hotly, "but it is now that I'm too?"
"Yes," WWX deadpans.
"No."
"Yes."
Just then, a giggle pierces through the atmosphere.
"Lan Zhan, get up right now or else…"
"Else what?" LWJ's nostrils flare.
"Lan Zhan," WWX enlarges his eyes, "it's my birthday, you promised we'd do all I say."
Lan Zhan exhales stubbornly, but gets up.
WWX grabs him and runs.
"How long do you give them?" The giggling voice asks, looking out from a window inside the hut.
"Not even tonight," a man beside him says.
He giggles again.
"It was not nice of us," the man admonishes, "to mess with them."
"Cutie did say I'm someone-not-nice," he shrugs.
"It's not my fault they've turned today into this thing called halloween," the giggling voice says, indignant, "it's almost like they're paying homage to me."
"They weren't celebrating Halloween."
"I doubt they meant it literally."
"Aiyah!" a pair of grey eyes enlarge, "it's my birthday, you promised we'd do all I say."
Golden eyed man sighs. "Some things do not change."
———
"I don't think the laugh was creepy, Wei Ying," he says after a while.
WWX bristles. "Hey! Don't you dare fall in love with a ghost now."
"I'm just saying, what if all that meant something else?"
"What if we have a connection?"
"Ofc we do," says WWX, "We have a perfectly alive, non-creepy connection."
LWJ frowns. "I mean a different connection."
"Like what?" WWX grits his teeth.
LWJ watches him icily. "Like this," he kisses him.
He blinks some more. Then, "Oh," he says, in a perfect 💡 moment.
"Hey Lan Zhan," still blinking, "let's go there again tomorrow. I'd like to explore this connection more."
"I don't think we need to go there for that."
"Oh."
💡
"You would like to?" Lan Zhan makes space for him.
"Oh baby," WWX climbs into his lap, "best present ever."
Lan pulls him close. "Happy Birthday."
It indeed doesn't take them more than the night they spend kissing.
Happy Birthday, Wei Wuxian!! 👻
