The sun is high in the sky, basking the land in itโ€™s warmth. A large lake lay at the bottom of the valley, a few dozen meters beneath his resting place. The bullet wounds in his throat don't hurt; in fact they don't appear to be there at all.
4
Confusion swims in his eyes, but he takes a deep breath. Wasnโ€™t he dead? The soft bowing of an old, finely-tuned violin makes him shiver. That sound was familiar, but he couldnโ€™t even find himself fearful of it.
5
Eyes scan the valley below, and he jolts to his feet, mouth open from awe. Now that his vision was clearing and he was able to get a better look at the new world around him, everything became so much more beautiful.
6
Those were people he knew, people he hadnโ€™t seen in years. Looking better than ever, more healthy and happy than they had in life. But they were all supposed to beโ€ฆ dead. ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ, the voice in his head confirms.
7
Phoenix canโ€™t find it in him to be upset, or mad. That warmth wells up in his chest, and a small grin crosses his face. Venus was safe, he knew that.
8
Heโ€™d given his life to save hersโ€™, and he didnโ€™t regret it for a single moment. If a bullet in the neck was what was necessary, then so be it.

And in the end, he'd even righted his wrong. Rhys was alive, he'd be okay. He had to be.
9
Heโ€™d earned this rest, and it was, not so regrettably, the one he wanted it. Heโ€™d just gotten it much sooner than heโ€™d expected. Thoughts of the kids they were supposed to have together, the life in Kalosโ€ฆ
10
But Venus would have to find someone else, and she could. She was the most beautiful girl in the entire world, after all. She didnโ€™t need some fox-brained lab experiment; she deserved someone better.
11
Phoenix rolled his shoulders and took a deep breath, picking his way carefully down the grassy incline, worried theyโ€™d not receive him well.
12
โ€ฆ
13
But they did. The boundaries in life were not the same as the ones here: there were none. The boy Phoenix only knew as 078E, once mostly Arcanine, was now just a normal boy, and no one pointed out Phoenixโ€™s still-existing animalistic features. Because it didnโ€™t matter.
14
The sun didnโ€™t set for hours; hanging in the sky. The sun never set in heaven, it seemed. But no one minded, because this sun was special.
15
No one ever got sick because it was too hot, or too cold; the temperature always just right, the breeze just strong enough to carry the coolness from the lake to their life-weary bodies.
16
Combee and Cutiefly settled in Phoenixโ€™s fur, but they didnโ€™t sting nor did they make him break out in rashes. It was nice being so close to creatures that normally wouldโ€™ve ended up sending him into shock.
17
Small conversations, speaking of their families, their friends, the dreams theyโ€™d had; Phoenix listened to them all. The first time heโ€™d felt like heโ€™d truly belonged since Venus walked into his life, and it was wonderful.
18
These people, though dead, all understood what heโ€™d went through, because they lived it, too.
19
The mute manโ€™s soft music made with his violin only made it that much better. The world was cold and heartless, but this place wasnโ€™t, and there were so many more people he hadnโ€™t met yet.
20
These were just a fraction of the people heโ€™d met and watched die all those years ago: and the rest of them were living their own lives, in their own special part of heaven.
21
Pushing himself to his feet, he bid them good-bye; there were a lot more things to see, and an entire eternity to do it all. He turned to leave, but suddenly the boy who used to be โ€œ078Eโ€ spoke up, directly to him.
22
โ€œIf you see Lyra, will you send her to me? Itโ€™s been a while. Sheโ€™s my age and sheโ€™s got blue pigtails; she canโ€™t be too hard to find. Sheโ€™ll probably be with her mom.โ€ A light ear-twitch, but Phoenix nodded. It wasnโ€™t like he had anything else to do.
23
โ€œIโ€™ll send her to the lake for you, no problem, woof.โ€ A wag of his ink-black tail, and off he went. To find Lyra and her mother; the name was familiar, but heโ€™d never actually met the girl. If she was Lyra, then the boy he spoke toโ€ฆ?
24
Looked oddly like Kenโ€”once Unspoken, but they all chose to go back to their old names, or make up new ones, when theyโ€™d escaped Team Plasma.
25
...๐˜Œ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ. That was it. A small sigh as he picked up the pace, soon breaking into a dead run. One that heโ€™d never tire from, just like the graceful Suicune. They ran and ran and ran, yet their stamina never ran out, their job never ending.
26
Breathing in deep, Phoenix took in all the new scents and smells. Lots of Pokemon scents, and for a split second, the Chimera almost thought he saw a large Ursaring nosing around in the bushes for food. The flowers smelled amazing, too.
27
The lake seemed to amplify every scent around it, but none of it was ever overwhelming.
28
Joyful yips filled his ears and he skidded to a halt for a moment, tail beginning to wag wildly. A small horde of Houndour scrambled off the shore and through the undergrowth, snorting smoke. All the little pups who were just never strong enough.
29
Dropping to his knees, Phoenix let the pup brigade tackle him to the soft, grassy forest floor. Drowned in drool and dog kisses, it took all the strength he had not to stay there and nap with them as they grew tired and bored of being pet and tickled.
30
The sun was so nice, and the forest was dark enough for a nice nap, after all...
31
But Phoenix had a job! He gently shifted a small brown canine off of his stomach, setting them in the rich grass. A kiss for each of the five pupsโ€™ foreheads, something they deserved so much more in life, but it was all he could do now, in death.
32
A small yip in farewell and he was gone again, that grin never leaving his face. If only he could share here and now with Venus, itโ€™d be perfect. But she was safe on Earth, and that was good enough for him.
33
Maybe heโ€™d see her again some day, and when that time came, heโ€™d have a lot of things to tell her.
34
And poor Rhys... Phoenix hoped he'd not have to see him for a while. He deserved a long, happy life, one that Phoenix had almost snuffed out. Had. Snuffed out.

Only eighteen... Too young to die... but...
35
Old people, companions heโ€™d never had the chance to befriend, were all here now. All waiting with open arms, ready to welcome him into their ranks.
36
This place, Heaven or not, was beautiful, and he couldnโ€™t wait until he found the woman whoโ€™d taught him to read and write.

He had so much to thank her for, after all.
37

And that was alright.
