Every morning at 7:15, he walked into the dining room in a pressed shirt, nodded at the host and said, "Room 214."
The host, a 20-year-old on his first job, said, "Good morning, sir, enjoy your breakfast."
He ate two eggs, three sausages and a croissant, and left a small card on the table: "Eggs: excellent. Mushrooms: lacking."
On day 41, the host's manager walked up behind him, glanced at the card and said, very quietly, "Sir. We don't have a Room 214."
The man put down his fork. He said, "I know."...
He said, "Because nobody asked me to prove it."
She picked up the cards. There were 41, all neatly written, with scores out of ten, a comment on the toast and one sketch of a croissant.
She said, "Head office has been receiving these. They think you're the mystery inspector."
He said, "Am I?"
The hotel won "Best Breakfast in the Region" last month. They've now made Room 214 official: a corner table with a small brass plaque.
He still goes every morning. He has never paid. The host brings the mushrooms extra without being asked.
