dkbk, bkdk, fantasy AU, implied major character death, resurrection, heavy angst, open-ended

Based on @cinnabananamon BEAUTIFUL piece. I’ll link below and at the end.

Love can make people desperate. Izuku never fully understood why

until Katsuki died on the battlefield. His knight in shining armor, the light of his life—snuffed out forever with just the swing of a blade.

…Except concepts like ‘forever’ don’t exist when you know magic. The string of fate itself can be twisted with the correct spell.

It’s that notion keeping Izuku going as he finishes his preparations, his hands shaking so badly that it takes three tries to light the last candle. Just one thought repeating endlessly in his head—

/If anyone can bring Katsuki back, it’s me./
5
He needs to be focused. Calm. It’s difficult to manage when his gut roils, tossing uneasily. In a few minutes, he’s about to learn if all these weeks of research have paid off. He’ll either be reunited with his lover or…

He doesn’t want to think about the other possibility.
6
“Kacchan,” he calls softly from across the room. His voice sounds far steadier than he feels. “You’re going to wake up soon, my love.”

He finishes up the last of his work, checking and rechecking to make sure it’s all in order. Only then does he approach the corpse.
7
That’s how the spellbook has it written, but he despises that term.

Katsuki is lost, he’s not gone.

Izuku studies him for a moment, drawing in a deep breath. It’s as though the man laying on the slab is merely sleeping.
8
The scars running over the knight’s body remind him that things aren’t that simple.

Gently, he settles a palm on Katsuki’s smooth, unmarked cheek. His skin is cold to the touch. “It’s time, Kacchan. Are you ready?”
9
Carefully, he slips the dead man into his arms, carrying him to the bathtub in the center of the room. It’s tricky, getting both of them to fit inside, but he takes great pains to ensure that Katsuki is barely jostled.
10
The water slides up their chests, soaking his clothing until it clings tight. Izuku’s teeth chatter. “Sorry, Kacchan. It’s awfully cold, isn’t it?” He presses a kiss to his forehead. “Don’t worry, as soon as the ritual is over, we’ll get you warmed up.
11
I’ve got clean cl-clothes and a fire going…”

Katsuki says nothing, of course, his eyes still sealed shut. Izuku’s desire to see them again, to gaze into those familiar pools of red, is so intense it nearly consumes him.

“Soon, soon…” he tells himself.
12
Ever since Katsuki passed, Izuku’s study has become a tomb—as quiet as one, too. To counter the oppressive silence, Izuku’s mumbling has increased threefold.
Sometimes he carries on conversations with himself. Sometimes with Katsuki…
13
...always revolving around the subject of resurrection.

“No r-reason to delay.”

Finally, the moment of truth has arrived.

His heart beats furiously in his ribcage, threatening to burst. A nervous laugh escapes from his quivering lips.
14
“I’m just being s-silly. It’ll work, right Kacchan?” The next part he whispers so quietly against the other man’s neck that he can barely hear himself. “…I don’t know what I’ll do if it doesn’t.”
15
Allowing himself one final moment of grief, Izuku sobs quietly before he wipes the tears from his cheeks. Then he forces a smile on his face. “H-here we go.”

The recitation goes smoothly, as Izuku has practiced dozens of times.
16
The spellbook demands that he repeat it thrice, so he does, each time squeezing Katsuki a little tighter. Maybe he can feel the moment his heart restarts or his lungs draw breath if he holds Katsuki close enough.

An eternity passes until the body in his arm stirs.
17
When it does, as the last syllable of the final word leaves his mouth, Izuku freezes.

Was that his imagination? A trick of his anguished mind?

“…Kacchan?” The name, typically filled with reverence, now holds a bit of fear. What if it didn’t work? What if he failed?
18
Katsuki slumps forward in his arms.

“Kacchan?!” Izuku hadn’t caused that; Katsuki’s movement was entirely his own.

He cranes his neck to see the knight’s face, and catches a glimpse of red. Katsuki’s eyes are barely open, but the sliver is still visible.
19
As is the shallow breath he draws, evident in the shake of his chest.

Hope lights anew, so hot it almost feels like Izuku’s insides are burning… Until he notices how blank Katsuki’s gaze is.

The spell worked, but only in part.
20
Izuku slides down, pulling an unresponsive Katsuki with him. He doesn’t notice the cold water anymore, nor the tears falling from his eyes. In a desperate murmur, he makes a promise to the man he loves.

“This isn’t over. I WILL find a way, Kacchan.”

……….it’s a cleansing angst. Good for the pores.

Writing something based on an artist’s work is pretty damn cool. I’m super happy that I got to do it for this one. Cinna can really gouge the heart, can’t she?? 😭🫶
