CW: angst, selfharm, abusive relationships

Soulmate AU where people get soulmarks in their 18 birthdays and some counterculture develops in some very dark punk scenes where teens get their marks burnt /cut the moment they appear by a friend so they never have to see it.
2
Having a soulmate doesn't mean having a happily ever after. Some people are the worst even to their soulmates. Specially to their soulmates. Because what's more convenient to an abuser than someone who is forced by the Fates and the Universe to love you unconditionally?
3
So, yeah, some kids grow up in these homes, seeing there wrecked relationships, seeing one of their parents be abused again and again by the one that was supposed to be the half of their soul. Who would want a soulmarks after seeing that?
4
So a trend starts. Or maybe it's not a trend, it's a cry for help, it's a desperate attempt at emotional freedom. But if you never see your mark, you never know who is your soulmate. You're free to live you life and love who you want to love.

So right at midnight, when
5
the Gods' gift for humanity is about to seal their fate forever, when the 17yo feels a patch of their skin tingle, they take a desperate step. Maybe there's some coal burning in the fireplace, maybe a kitchen knife is on the drying rack. Some how, they make it stop.
6
They get rid of the mark just at it shows up, never getting the chance of taking a good look at it. And when they wash the blood out and cry in pain, it's done. It's forever.

And then another teen, in similar situations, find out what they did and beg them for help.
7
Troubled teens have a way of finding each other. Birds of a feather, birds of broken nests.

At first it's just a friend helping the other out. And then two friends. And then someone from another town over hears about it.

And so it goes.

All marks being erased.
8
They're all free.

Or so they think.

Because what teens don't realize is that they won't be 18 forever. They don't realize scars are only skin-deep.

They don't realize the marks they got rid of aren't called skin marks for a damn good reason.

You can't burn away your soul.
9
This is a free use idea. I'd love to read someone's take on it, but I don't think I'd be up to writing it
10
I can imagine this going so many ways...

Maybe Katsuki is the one who burns his mark. He saw how destroyed his mother was when Madara cheated on her, how she became bitter and mean in a way she wasn't before. He knows how much like her he is and he refuses to let that happen to
11
him.

But then almost a decade later he meets a guy with the brightest smile he ever saw and they just have this instante connection he can't explain. They go out, start dating, start falling in love... But it comes the time when he sees Katsuki's scar where the mark should be
12
And Deku just.... Deflates.

You see, Izuku is a romantic and he **loves** his soulmark. It's a beautiful orange explosion with the kanji for victory in the middle. Since the moment he got the mark, he fell in love with the person who it represented. Whenever life got hard,
13
Izuku looked at his mark and gained strength bc if victory represented his soulmate, he can't give up, he needs to work hard to be worthy of such soulmate.

Izuku dreamed about seeing what the mark of his soulmate would be. Is it beautiful? Is his soulmate proud of bearing it?
14
But then he sees Kacchan's shoulder and... It just hurts.

He'll never be sure if the guy who he feels so strongly about is really his soulmate... And if he is, Izuku will never know if the mark he left on Kacchan's skin was pretty, if it was something to be proud of...
15
Maybe it's Izuku who chooses to get rid of his mark.

His mom's soulmate left her the moment he found one she was pregnant. Izuku grew up seeing the painful loneliness of his mother, seeing how hard the world treats single moms, seeing how much she struggled on her own...
16
If someone as kind and gentle as his mom couldn't keep a soulmate around, what chances did quirkless, plain Izuku had? It already hurt so much waiting for a quirk before he knew it wouldn't come... Will he be cursed with a lifetime looking at some mark on his skin and not having
17
anyone by his side?

So he cuts it off. It's not going to make any difference in his life anyway.

What he doesn't know is that just a few blocks away, that night, as Izuku makes his skin bleed,Katsuki gently caresses the green lightning on his shoulder, excited to talk to Deku
18
Ask about his mark, talk about *their* mark...
