❌ WHAT NOVICES CHECK WHEN BUYING A LAPTOP

1. Whether it's Core i5 or Core i7.
2. Whether it has 8GB, 16GB or 32GB RAM.
3. How much storage it has (256GB, 512GB or 1TB).

4. How slim and attractive it looks.
5. Whether it's a touchscreen.
6. The screen size (14-inch or 15.6-inch).

7. Whether the keyboard is backlit or RGB.
8. Whether it's a Gaming or Creator laptop.

9. Whether it's an M1, M2 or M3 MacBook.

✅ WHAT EXPERIENCED BUYERS CHECK ↓↓
2
✅ 1. Exact processor model, not just Core i5 or i7.

They check the processor's full model number, generation, cores and performance class.

For example, an 11th-generation Core i5 can outperform an 8th-generation Core i7 in many workloads.

They also understand processor suffixes:

- U: Generally designed for power efficiency.
- H: Designed for higher performance.
- P: Performance-oriented thin-and-light processors.
- HX: High-performance processors, commonly found in powerful laptops.

Don't buy an i7 simply because the seller says it's better than an i5.
3
✅2. RAM capacity, type and upgradeability.

They know that 8GB and 16GB RAM aren't the same thing, especially when multitasking, running several applications or editing videos.

But not only that; they also check:

- DDR4 or DDR5.
- Whether the RAM is soldered or removable.
- Whether there's an available RAM slot.
- Maximum supported RAM.

They know that a laptop with 8GB soldered RAM and no upgrade slot could become a limitation later.
4
✅ 3. SSD versus HDD.

They don't just ask how much storage a laptop has. They check the storage type.

- An SSD makes a noticeable difference in booting, opening applications and general responsiveness compared with a traditional HDD.

They also check whether the SSD is SATA or NVMe and whether it can be upgraded. Both are very good, but NVMe is even a little better.
5
✅ 4. Display resolution, brightness and panel type.

They know that a 15.6-inch screen doesn't automatically mean a better display.

They check:

- Resolution: Full HD (1920 × 1080) is a good starting point.

- Panel type: IPS generally offers better viewing angles than TN.

- Brightness: 250 nits can be limiting in bright environments; 300 nits or more is preferable.

- Colour accuracy: Particularly important for graphic designers and video editors.

A smaller laptop with a better display can be a better purchase than a larger one with a poor screen.
6
✅ 5. Dedicated GPU specifications.

Experienced buyers don't get excited simply because a seller advertises 4GB graphics.

They check the actual GPU model, generation, VRAM and performance.

For example, Intel UHD Graphics, Intel Iris Xe and NVIDIA RTX graphics are not interchangeable.

- If you're buying a laptop for ordinary office work, browsing and online classes, Intel UHD may be sufficient.

- For light creative work, Iris Xe can be a better option.

- For demanding gaming, 3D design and GPU-intensive video editing, consider a laptop with a suitable dedicated NVIDIA GPU.

Also, note that not every laptop needs a dedicated graphics card. For ordinary office work, browsing and light tasks, integrated graphics like the Intel UHD may be okay.
7
✅ 6. Actual battery health.

For used Windows laptops, they know how to generate a battery report.

- Open Command Prompt and enter: powercfg /batteryreport
- Check the Design Capacity and the Full Charge Capacity.

For example, if the original capacity was 50,000 mWh but the current full charge capacity is 35,000 mWh, the battery has lost about 30% of its original capacity.

That's more useful than simply asking the seller whether the battery lasts long.

🎉 If you don't know how to open Command Prompt, the quickest method is:

- Press Windows + R on your keyboard.
- Type cmd.
- Press Enter.

Another method:

- Click the Windows Start button.
- Type cmd or Command Prompt in the search bar.
- Click the Command Prompt app.
8
✅ 7. Upgradeability and repairability.

They check whether the RAM, SSD and battery can be replaced. They also consider the availability and cost of replacement parts.

Some thin laptops have soldered RAM, meaning you cannot simply buy another RAM stick when you need more memory.

These are worth considering.
9
✅ 8. Actual physical and internal condition.

Especially when buying UK-used laptops, they don't just inspect the body.

They check:

- the screen for dead pixels, pressure marks and discoloration.
- the hinges for looseness.
- every button on the keyboard and around the laptop.
- the trackpad functionality.
- the speakers, webcam and microphone.
- USB ports and charging port.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, hotspot, and all connectivity features.
10
✅ 9. They know what they need the laptop for.

- For office work, browsing and online classes:

A Core i5 (8th generation or newer), 8GB–16GB RAM and an SSD can handle most everyday tasks. For a longer-term purchase, consider a newer generation.

- For programming and multitasking:

Consider a Core i5 or i7 (10th generation or newer), 16GB RAM or more and a good SSD. For heavier development work, go for a more powerful processor and 32GB RAM where necessary.

- For CapCut and video editing:

Look for at least a Core i5 (10th generation or newer), 16GB RAM and a minimum of 512GB SSD if you'll be making a lot of video. For demanding editing work, consider a newer H-series processor and a dedicated GPU (graphics card).

- For gaming and 3D design:

Pay serious attention to the dedicated GPU, VRAM, processor generation, cooling system and display. Consider newer Core i5/i7 H-series processors and suitable NVIDIA RTX graphics.

- For graphic design:

Consider a Core i5 or i7 (10th generation or newer), 16GB RAM, SSD and a good-quality display. For demanding work, check the GPU requirements of your design software.

Importantly...

Note that these are general starting points, not universal minimum requirements.

Remember always that an 11th-generation i5 can outperform an 8th-generation i7, and the exact processor model matters just as much as its generation.
11
✅ 10. MacBook chip, RAM and SSD configuration.

They don't just ask whether it's an M1, M2 or M3 MacBook. They check the exact chip variant, RAM, and SSD capacity.

For example:

An M1 MacBook with 16GB RAM can be a better buy for certain workloads than an M2 MacBook with 8GB RAM.

- M1, M2, M3 and M4 are different chip generations, but the generation alone doesn't determine which is the better purchase.

- MacBook RAM and internal storage generally cannot be upgraded after purchase. So, you must choose the right configuration right from the outset.

- They also check macOS compatibility, battery cycle count, battery health, activation lock and MDM (Mobile Device Management) restrictions.

One important lesson:

Don't buy a MacBook simply because it's an M2 or M3. An older chip with more memory and adequate storage may serve you better than a newer chip with an insufficient configuration.
