2 DAYS until Valor Mortis!

Today I'd like to talk about something you don't really see in trailers, but which gave us plenty of headaches during development. :)

What makes building a game like @ValorMortis so complicated? 🧵

It's not necessarily the individual mechanics. We've been making action games for years, and we know a thing or two about combat, movement and level design.

The real challenge with Valor Mortis was the sheer number of systems interacting with each other, often in ways that are incredibly difficult to predict.

And the freedom we give players makes things even more interesting.

Think about all the different weapons, abilities and items you can use, and the situations in which you might use them.

Or quests that players can approach in different ways, sometimes doing things in an order we never expected.

What happens if you reach a quest location before you're supposed to? Or use an ability to get somewhere you shouldn't be able to reach yet?

Every possibility creates another set of questions, and there are plenty of possibilities.

And then there are doors...

Oh, doors. Every game developer's nightmare😱

Should this door be open or closed? Does it need a key? What happens after a quest? Can the player open it from the other side?

Sounds simple enough, right?

Now imagine the player manages to jump through a window, land behind that locked door and enter an area they weren't supposed to reach yet.

Does the quest still work? Will the right characters be there? Can the player get back out? Did we just break five other things without even realizing it?

It's amazing how something as innocent as a door can cause an entire chain reaction. ⛓️

Now multiply that by dozens of locations, quests, abilities, items and all the different ways players can interact with the world.

That's the kind of complexity we've been dealing with throughout development. And honestly, I'm sure that once the game is out, players will find situations we never even thought of.

That's part of making games that give players room to experiment. You can test an incredible number of scenarios, but players will always surprise you.

And I can't wait to see what you come up with. Just please, be gentle with our doors😅

2 days to go. ⚔️

Bonus from the archives :)

We've talked about complicated systems, unpredictable player behavior and the nightmare of making doors work properly.

But sometimes it's just the physics engine having a bad day.

An old bug from development, long since fixed. Enjoy! 😆
