The pull and rotation. A visual 🧵.

1. Rotation must occur in freestyle so that swimmers can set up the stroke effectively.

It allows swimmers to get into an effective position where they can create a lot of propulsion.

It’s much harder to do without rotation.

2. As swimmers pull, they need to rotate back in the other direction to ensure that they can maintain a great pulling position for as long as possible.

It allows them to keep the whole forearm facing backward, and it allows them to accelerate through the back of the stroke.

3. The backstroke pull is very different.

There’s a ton of rotation upon entry to allow swimmers to set up the stroke quickly.

This happens fast, and all the rotation happens right away.

4. During the pull itself, there’s actually very little rotation.

That ensures that the arm stays in position to create a lot of propulsion.

To maximize the pull, swimmers have to delay their rotation until AFTER the pull.
