In the Qur’an, Allah says:
“Wal-‘Asr” By Time
But here’s the question no one asks:
Why didn’t He say “Zaman”?
In Arabic, Zaman is chronological time. It’s the clock on the wall. It is the neutral, horizontal line of seconds, minutes, and hours.

But 'Asr is different. It is time with a pulse.
The root of ‘Asr is the same as ‘Asir (juice).
It literally means "to press" or "to squeeze." When you squeeze an orange to get the essence out, that act is ‘Asr.
By swearing by ‘Asr, Allah is swearing by Time under Pressure.

Imam al-Razi once shared a story of an ice-seller in the market shouting:
"Have mercy on the man whose capital is melting away!"
The merchant knew if he didn’t sell his ice before the sun set, he wouldn't just lose profit he’d have nothing left but a puddle of water.
Our "ice" is our time. We aren't just losing profit; we're losing our very existence.

This is why the next verse is a verdict:
"Innal-insana lafee khusr" (Verily, man is in a state of loss).

Surah Al-Asr gives four anchors against the collapse:
• Iman; what grounds you
• ‘Amal صالح ; what moves you
• Haqq; what aligns you
• Sabr; what sustains you

You think you are living through time.
But ‘Asr suggests something far more unsettling: Time is living through you.
Allah swore by ‘Asr because ‘Asr is not just a witness. It is Extracting. Recording. Evidence.
On the Day you meet Allah, You won’t be asked how much time you had.
You will be shown what time took out of you.
And that is what will decide everything.
