/13 If you’re confused about why the U.S. struck Iran, here’s what you need to know:

/13 Officials claim Iran’s nuclear and missile programs could threaten American forces, allies, and even the global balance of power. The U.S. government says these strikes are meant as a pre-emptive defense to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons that could reach far beyond its borders, possibly even the U.S. itself.

/13 For decades, senior leaders of the IRGC have openly called for the destruction of the United States and for establishing Islamic dominance worldwide through terrorism.

/13 In recent years, specifically 2024 - 2025, the U.S. government uncovered a series of Iranian plots to assassinate high-ranking officials, including Donald Trump, John Bolton, and Mike Pompeo. In November 2024, the Department of Justice, DOJ, charged several individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, for a plot to kill Trump before the elections.

/13 In 2024, a Pakistani man named Asif Merchant was arrested for trying to hire hitmen to kill a "political person" in the U.S., later confirmed to be Donald Trump.

/13 There’s a long history of tension between the U.S. and Iran: attacks on American bases, threats against allies, and accusations of Iran supporting armed groups in the region. Past incidents, like missile attacks on U.S. soldiers in Iraq, are often brought up in public debate.

/13 In June 2025, Iran launched ballistic missile volleys toward U.S. bases in the Gulf, most notably the Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

/13 Some people see this as part of a larger struggle for influence in the Middle East and the world. The U.S. wants to limit Iran’s power and stop it from dominating the region or threatening global stability.

/13 The Iranian regime’s grand strategy is centered on dismantling U.S. hegemony to establish itself as the undisputed regional power and a pivotal player in a new multipolar world order.

/13 By pursuing the total expulsion of American forces from the Middle East, targeting Americans around the world, funding terrorist groups, and manipulating social media through bots and divisive accounts, Tehran seeks to weaken U.S. influence both at home and abroad. Deepening strategic alliances with Russia, including efforts to 'de-dollarize' its economy, further insulates Iran from Western pressure.

/13 This vision is executed through the 'Axis of Resistance,' a sophisticated network of proxies like Hezbollah and the Houthis that project Iranian power through asymmetric warfare, effectively exhausting U.S. resources, deterring direct conflict, and expanding Iran’s 'strategic depth.'

/13 What Happened in the Last 24 Hours (March 1–2, 2026)
In the past day, Iran retaliated with hundreds of missiles and drones launched at Israel and multiple Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Some projectiles were intercepted, while others caused civilian casualties, including hits in Beersheba and Tel Aviv. At least three U.S. troops were killed in Iranian strikes on American bases. The escalation has also driven a diplomatic shift, with Gulf states closing ranks against Tehran; the UAE even closed its embassy in Iran.
Large protests by Iranian dissidents erupted abroad, including in London, voicing support for U.S. and Israeli actions and calling for the regime’s downfall.
The conflict has now expanded well beyond a bilateral confrontation, drawing in the wider region and increasing the risk of further escalation.
