"On August 9, 1919, Ernst Haeckel, aged 85, closed his eyes forever. Thus ended a life as rich in productivity and impact, but also in struggle and malicious slander, as few others. For a time, the relentless and unhesitating barrage of attacks by those well-known "obscurantists" against the "monkey professor" of Jena, the "atheist and materialist," seemed almost to have succeeded in distorting the image of this German natural scientist to such an extent that he could be considered "finished."
But the tide has turned. Now that the dispute over time-bound details of his work has been settled, the figure of this man appears to us in his true historical significance for the establishment of a biologically grounded worldview and thus for the intellectual prehistory of the National Socialist revolution.
Anyone who still jokes about Haeckel's resurrection today only shows that they do not understand the connection between Haeckel's genealogical research in general and the current understanding that man is a natural being, that is, racially determined in all his expressions of life. [...] Haeckel has often been criticized for the fact that, in his time, Marxism, completely misjudging the actual situation, adopted his formulations, just as [Charles] Darwin's theory did, for whose establishment Haeckel deserves the greatest credit.
How unjust such accusations are is demonstrated best by his own statements regarding Marxism, or, as he called it then, socialism: "More clearly than any other scientific theory, the theory of descent preaches that the equality of individuals sought by socialism is an impossibility... Every sensible politician should recommend the theory of descent as the best antidote to the bottomless absurdity of socialist leveling... The true and truly useful weapons in the fight against the heresies of social democracy are not provided by the Christian faith, but by rational science..."
Haeckel was not only a creative mind and a thorough, successful scholar (over 4,000 species were discovered by him alone), but also a combative, fiery spirit and an immensely successful writer. His popular works have been translated into millions of copies in all languages โโof the world. He, too, contributed significantly to the global standing of German science, and we have every reason to remember him gratefully, even though his active spirit sometimes led him to overshoot the mark. We would like to recall only one word that was spoken about Haeckel at the beginning of his career: "But whoever does not know enthusiasm will be spared not only from serious errors, but also from great achievements."
