Most people misunderstand "conceal your intentions."
They think it means lying to everyone about everything.
Wrong.
Robert Greene breaks down when to be transparent and when to keep your cards close. It's more nuanced than you think.
With your team: Be direct about your vision.
They need to know where you're going. If you're always hiding your plans internally, you create chaos. Your team can't execute if they don't understand the mission.
Transparency with your people = alignment.
But with rivals? Different game entirely.
If competitors know exactly where you're headed, they'll mirror you. They'll steal your moves. They'll get there first.
Keep external players on their heels. Never let them predict your next move.
Napoleon mixed punishment and kindness randomly.
Not because he was cruel. Because predictability makes people complacent.
When they can't quite read you, they try harder. They stay sharp. They don't take your approval for granted.
Real power is thinking 2-3 moves ahead.
Otto von Bismarck planned six months out. He knew his intentions, but kept everyone else in the dark about his timeline.
Strategy requires having a plan that only you can see.
Silence creates an aura of power.
50 Cent would sit in meetings saying almost nothing. Everyone's eyes stayed on him.
"Why isn't he reacting? What's he thinking?"
When people are trying to read you, you control the room.
Talking too much signals you can't control yourself.
If you can't control your mouth, what can you control?
When you do speak after being quiet, people actually listen. Your words carry weight instead of becoming noise.
The framework:
Internal (team): Clear vision, direct communication
External (rivals): Unpredictable, strategic opacity
With everyone: Say less than necessary
Master when to reveal and when to conceal. Context is everything.
