Between 1994 and 2000, the pole shift accelerated significantly, reaching speeds of 30 to 55 km per year, comparable to the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion!

In practical terms, precession changes when in the year each hemisphere faces the Sun most directly. This affects the distribution of solar radiation (insolation) across seasons and latitudes.
Around 10,000 years ago, Earth’s tilt placed northern summers closer to the Sun, making them hotter. This boosted the African monsoon and turned the Sahara green with lakes between 14,000 and 6000 years ago. But as precession shifted, summers weakened, rains vanished, and the Sahara rapidly turned into desert about 6,000–5,000 years ago. This shows how Earth’s slow wobble builds gradual pressure until a tipping point triggers abrupt climate change—just as seen in other events like the Younger Dryas cooling.

In my opinion the Earth’s magnetic field is created by swirling molten iron in the outer core, and these flows are organized by the Coriolis force, which is the same effect that makes hurricanes spin because of Earth’s rotation.
Axial precession, the slow wobble of Earth’s axis gradually changes the direction of the axis in space. Over thousands of years the liquid core cannot keep up perfectly, and this causes stress and misalignment in the flow. The Coriolis force keeps the core flows aligned with Earth’s axis, but precession slowly shifts that axis.
As the fluid core lags behind, stress builds until at certain points in the cycle the misalignment becomes unstable. When that happens, the magnetic field weakens and reorganizes, creating what we call a geomagnetic excursion. (5/🧵
