On June 29, 1941, German alpine troops in Greece took part in a reenactment of the Battle of Thermopylae in front of Field Marshal Wilhelm List, at the very site where Leonidas and his men fought the Persians in 480 BC and where German forces had defeated Australian and New Zealand troops in April of the same year during the Second Battle of Thermopylae. Afterwards, an athletic contest was held, and the Field Marshal awarded medals to the winners.
