The CDU has totally capitulated to AfD demands – pledging to bring not just meaningless resolutions or procedurally unworkable new legislation, but an old tabled bill from last September. Chances are high it will pass on Friday with votes from AfD.

Having broken the tabu of voting with the AfD on Friday – even rhetorically – Merz found himself trapped by his own words. The left and the media would attack him either way, his early backtracking just meant that he saw no upside from his predicament. So, he's doubled down.
