Between the European elections, Biden’s border order and Reform peeling off Conservatives, now feels like the perfect time to air my in-depth chat with @JerusalemDemsas about the politics of immigration, and why things play out differently in some countries to others 👇

The episode riffs on a few pieces I’ve written recently, including this ft.com/content/a45402…

As I discuss in the podcast, one thing I think is definitely getting better about immigration discourse is that discussions increasingly distinguish between immigrants who come for work, for study, for asylum, illegal arrivals etc.

This is a huge improvement on the use of “immigration” as a single blunt label that both a) fails to capture the widely varying opinions people have on these different groups, and b) doesn’t tend to lead us closer to policy recommendations.

This more precise discourse is something America has always done much better than the UK and Europe (most Republicans want to give out more visas for overseas talent, and most Dems want less illegal immigration), and I hope it continues.
