Can AI ever be truly original?
DeepMind CEO and Co-founder, Demis Hassabis, thinks there are 3 levels of creativity for AI:
1) Interpolation: 1M images of cats averaged into one prototypical image.
2) Extrapolation: AlphaGo coming up with a new strategy in the game.
3) True invention, aka out-of-the-box thinking: Invent the game of go or chess.
We see evidence of 2), but nothing original stylistically like Picasso. But fundamentally, there is no reason to believe that AI couldn't reach level 3.
