Yoongi knows why Jimin had visited him at work and asked if he could talk to him when he gets home, why they're currently sat behind the dinner table of their shared apartment, facing each other with a tension so thick Yoongi can slice it with a knife.
"I—" Jimin begins, taking in a deep breath a while after his first word.
Yoongi can see that he's nervous too.
Yoongi curls a little on himself, chest tightening as the tension between them was finally verbalized.
Couples fight from time to time—it's a part of a relationship. So why wouldn't they? Where exactly is the error here?
Yoongi presses his lips together, dark fringe obscuring the view of his eyes.
"You've always been quiet, hyung. Sometimes, I wonder what's going on in your head. And..." Jimin drops his gaze on the table. "...Sometimes I wonder if I really knew who you are."
Taehyung. Ah, yes. He's the reason why he and Jimin are in this mess right now.
Yoongi bites his lower lip.
"But it looks like that reason is not enough for you."
"You're very nice to me and I love how attentive and caring you are through your actions. I don't ask you to say 'I love you' because I know that's not who you are. But sometimes, it feels nice to hear some sort of assurance, you know?"
Yoongi also doesn't know why.
"Do you really care about anything I do?"
Yoongi's fingers curl on the fabric of his jeans. He wants to throw up.
"Say something. Please."
Jimin sighs, and Yoongi notes the tiredness in his voice.
Yoongi clenches his hands together in his lap because they wouldn't stop shaking.
Jimin's lashes flutter at the mention of the man's name, averting his eyes from Yoongi's face. "Why is Taehyung coming up right now?"
/And your soulmate/, Yoongi adds in his mind, recalling the number of times that Jimin had told him how lucky he was to have a "platonic" soulmate.
"Does he make you smile?"
Jimin's lips part at the question. "W-Why are you asking this?"
Yoongi swallows dryly.
"I—I know, Jimin-ah."
"About what?"
"About you and Taehyung."
His heart sinks.
"What are you talking about, hyung? Taehyung and I are not— we're not— we're just friends."
"But you like him."
"You like him," Yoongi repeats. "I know you like him, Jimin-ah. Not just as a friend."
"I see the way you look at him. How you smile more when you're with him than with me lately. How happy and free you look when you talk to him."
"You... used to look and smile at me like that, Jimin-ah. That's how I knew."
Yoongi sees.
And he knows it.
"I..." Jimin struggles to find the right words, and Yoongi waits patiently for him. It's unusual to see Jimin this unsettled in front of him
Yoongi feels like a vice has just squeezed his heart, causing pain to lance through every corner in his chest. He's expected it, he saw it coming, and yet, it still hurts to hear Jimin say it.
"What do we do now?" Yoongi asks, his voice sounding so small to his own ears.
It was a safe call. Yoongi has expected for Jimin to break up with him, and yet, both of them know that breaking up is not something to be done so simply.
"I'll take the couch tonight. You go and get some rest, hyung."
Jimin walks away towards their bedroom to get some pillows and blanket before Yoongi could protest.
He wants to say that Jimin doesn't have to sleep on the couch. That Yoongi could just do it instead of him.
Jimin comes back holding two pillows and a blanket, stopping shortly in his steps when their gazes meet.
"Good night, hyung," the younger says, averting his eyes and walking towards the living room.
