スコポス理論って初めて知った。ギリシャ語の Skopos（目的） が語源らしい。
たとえば “Wet paint!” の直訳は「濡れペンキ!」だけど、実際に達成したい目的は 「ペンキ塗りたてなので、さわらないで！」であって、警告文として機能することが期待されている。
翻訳がある種の職人芸に見えるのは、その都度「何を達成したい発話か」まで含めて翻訳しているからで、スコポス理論はその原理を言語化したものなんだろう。
