My friends were all talking about prepping so I made a survival LLM. A free app that runs an AI mdoel plus 1.5 million offline articles (medical guides, FEMA, survival manuals, wikipedia) entirely on your computer. No internet needed. brangus.io/survival-llm

When you download it, it'll pick the best open model for your computer. It downloads that model along with the library. Setup is about 1 hour, 20 minutes to 2.5 hours, depending on your computer and internet. After that, it works with the Wi-Fi off.

It looks things up first and lists the articles it read. You can click through and check what it read. When the library has nothing, it still answers and says it's from memory or guesses. I tried to make it lean towards answering and not refusing, eg estimates micromorts

You can also add your own files, like your generator's manual or your family's emergency plan, and it searches those too. It's all open source, and the instructions the AI follows are one click away in the app if you want to change how it answers.
5
I don't really expect any particular emergency anytime soon, but if you consider buying a crank radio, spending an hour downloading an offline model and a library for it to search makes about as much sense.
6
I also tested all the models, by the way, with AI judging for grading, and they do pretty okay. The smaller models, of course, are worse. You can find the results on GitHub.

Also, you could do this yourself with claude code over a weekend, but if you aren't going to, you can just download this app in an hour of unsupervised time.
