17 November 1962. The icy heights of Nuranang, in present-day Arunachal Pradesh. India was at war with China. Amid relentless enemy attacks, a young Indian soldier was about to etch his name into military history.
His name was Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat.

Just 21 years old, Jaswant Singh Rawat served with the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles. He wasn’t a general or a commander. He was a rifleman, a young soldier standing between his motherland and an advancing enemy. But courage isn’t measured by rank. It’s measured by action.

At the Battle of Nuranang, Indian positions came under repeated attacks. An enemy medium machine gun threatened the defenders, making an already difficult situation even more dangerous. Someone had to silence it. Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat and his comrades volunteered for the perilous mission.

Alongside Lance Naik Trilok Singh Negi and Rifleman Gopal Singh Gusain, Jaswant moved towards the enemy gun position under intense fire. They crawled close, launched grenades and attacked the position. Jaswant seized the machine gun, a daring act carried out at enormous personal risk.

The mission came at a terrible cost. As Jaswant returned towards the Indian position with the captured weapon, enemy fire struck him. He was fatally wounded. His comrades, too, faced the full fury of the battlefield.
Their sacrifice was real. Their courage was extraordinary. Their actions became part of the proud history of the Garhwal Rifles.

Jaswant Singh Rawat’s story is not only about war. It is about duty when fear is real.
It is about courage when danger is overwhelming.
It is about comrades who face the impossible together. And it is about a sacrifice that outlived the soldier who made it.
