Rep. Ilhan Omar's granddad and dad were high-ranking supporters of Somali dictator Siad Barre, a Soviet ally. But he invaded Ethiopia, so Moscow switched to backing larger Ethiopia, and Somalia became a U.S. client. The dictator was overthrown, so Somalis tried to kill the Omars.

Lots of U.S. politicians with 3rd World ancestry like Rep. Omar and Barack Obama had relatives involved in bloody Cold War history. E.g., Obama's stepfather Lolo Soetoro had to return to Indonesia in 1965-66 to participate in the genocidal slaughter of Chinese communists.

Obama's father was the anchor witness in the trial of the hit man who in 1969 assassinated America's chief ally in Kenya, Tom Mboya. Many Kenyan supporters of Mboya blame Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello's great-uncle Jomo Kenyatta for hiring the hitman.

1960s Kenyan politics was a 3 way struggle among President Jomo Kenyatta of the Kikuyus, who was back to being friends with the Brits, and two Luos, Washington's man Tom Mboya and Moscow's man Oginga Odinga. Obama Sr. liked Odinga's stand more, but Mboya got him to Honolulu.

Around 1960, the young Mboya had made the statesmanlike gesture of declaring the old Kenyatta should be first president of independent Kenya.

But by 1969 Mboya was acting like 9 years was long enough. Bang, Mboya was shot dead in Nairobi moments after chatting with Obama Sr.

The gunman who assassinated Mboya went to his execution having only made a cryptic remark about "Why don't you ask the big man?" which Mboya's supporters took as a reference to the large president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta.
