I returned home from a two-week business trip and noticed my wife had changed the locks.
She opened the door when I knocked, but she wouldn’t let me inside.
“I think we need some time apart,” she said.
I was confused.
We’d spoken every night while I was away, and she’d never mentioned a problem.
I asked whether she’d met someone else.
She shook her head.
“No. This is about something you did.”
I demanded an explanation.
She handed me an envelope.
Inside were photographs of me entering a building I’d never seen before.
There were also copies of bank transfers from my personal account.
I stared at the documents.
The account number was correct.
But I’d never authorized those transactions.
I called my bank immediately.

They confirmed the money had been transferred to an account registered under my wife’s name.
I looked at her.
“You took my money?”
She shook her head.
“No. I found out someone was taking yours.”
“Who?”
She stepped aside and pointed toward the hallway.
A man was standing inside my house.
He looked exactly like me.
Same face.
Same height.
Same scar on the arm.
My wife whispered:
“He’s been living here while you’ve been away.”
The stranger smiled.
“You’re late.”

I stepped closer, trying to understand what I was seeing.
“Who the hell are you?”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out my passport.
Then he showed me a photograph of himself standing beside my wife at our wedding.
My wife started crying.
“He told me you had lost your memory and that you needed help.”
I turned toward her.
“Then why did you change the locks?”
She hesitated before answering.
“Because yesterday, he told me you were coming home.”
The stranger’s smile disappeared.
He looked at me and said, “You weren’t supposed to come back this soon.”
Then my phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number:
“Don’t trust your wife. She’s known about the real you all along.”
