A woman came into our flower shop and asked for the CHEAPEST bouquet we had.

Not for a wedding. Not for a birthday.

"It's for my husband's grave," she said. "Today's our anniversary."

She had $7 in exact change, counted out in a little plastic bag like she'd been saving it coin by coin for days.

Our cheapest bouquet is $20.

She saw me doing the math in my head and started putting the bag back in her purse before I'd even said anything.

"It's okay," she said. "I can just pick something from the garden at home. He'd understand."

I asked her to wait one second.

I went to the cooler like I was checking something, even though I already knew exactly what we had in stock.

I needed a minute to think, because I didn't want her walking out with nothing on a day like that.

She quietly rang up a second bouquet under "returns" and handed it over too.

"One from us, for her," Dana said, not even looking up from what she was doing.

The woman stood there holding both bouquets against her chest for a long moment, like she needed a second to believe it was real.

Then she said quietly:

"He would've liked that someone remembered without me having to ask."

She still comes in every year on that same date, always around the same time of day.

We've never charged her once.

We never will, not as long as either of us works here.
