"There are 3 types of people who never lie awake at night."
1. You wake up before your alarm
Here's why, and how to become one of them:
That is not luck. It is a body clock that knows what time it is.
Fix your wake time and the clock starts the morning early: cortisol rises in the hour before you open your eyes, and you surface on your own.
A 2024 study of 60,000 people found how regular your sleep is predicts how long you live better than how much you get.
Sleep clinics fix insomnia the same way. Wake time is fixed first. Bedtime is left to sort itself out.
Two things push you to sleep. A chemical called adenosine builds from the moment you wake, and a clock set by morning light decides when it is allowed to act.
If sleepiness arrives on schedule, both are working. If it wanders, one of them is broken.
Usually it is one thing you did after lunch.
A quarter of a 2pm coffee is still in your blood at midnight. Adenosine has built all day; you just cannot feel it, so you lie there tired and wide awake.
Cut it off by noon.
The third type is the strangest:
Good sleepers do not do anything at bedtime. They stop.
Insomniacs try. Breathing exercises, counting, etc.
But trying is a waking activity, and your brain cannot do a waking activity and switch off at the same time.
Lie there trying and the bed becomes the place you don't sleep.
