Giyuu returns as his hometown’s vet to keep a childhood promise to the boy he loved. But Sanemi has a band on his finger. A storm is breaking.

Giyuu Tomioka drummed his fingers against the steering wheel of his Land Cruiser. He was exhausted. The six-hour drive from the cities for this move back to his childhood home in a rural mountain town felt daunting. He still had three hours left.

Giyuu had never forgotten him. His name was Sanemi Shinazugawa. His best friend since boyhood.

They’d met in third grade on their school playground. A boy with purple eyes and shocking white spiky hair crouched down in the dirt by himself with his back turned.

The blue-eyed boy approached behind him, curious at what this kid was doing. He inched closer and closer…

Until Giyuu encountered a rhinoceros beetle being waved directly in his face.

“Aaagh!” Giyuu cried out and fell backward, landing on his butt. He heard some laughter.

The beetle was being held out by the boy with white-hair. He grinned at Giyuu like he had found some treasure.

“Isn’t this the coolest thing?!” The boy exclaimed, he nearly jumped from giddiness.

“It’s a bug!” Giyuu protested. The boy kept smiling. “They’re gross!”

“Aw, c’mon. Don’t be like that!” The boy then placed the beetle down carefully onto the little patch of grass. He had a fond look on his face as the insect crawled away.

“Rhinoceros beetles are so strong. You can make them fight!”

“Great.” Giyuu felt embarrassed.

The last thing Giyuu needed was to be called out for sticking his nose into other people’s business. This happens.

Giyuu brushed himself off and rose to his feet. He started walking away, until he heard the boy call out to him.

“Hey! What’s your name anyway?!”

It was then Giyuu turned around and found that the boy keeping pace with him. His face was earnest and dirt-streaked.

But it was his bright smile that took Giyu by surprise. He seemed friendly.

“Giyuu Tomioka.”

“Tomioka? I’m Sanemi Shinazugawa.”
