$MELI

Zero-thought engagement.
Automaticity in behavior.

These are the goals and destinations of the greatest businesses on planet Earth.

$GOOG exists in a world of automaticity. Need an answer? We go to the Google search bar without thinking about it. Need to advertise? We go to the place that has the search bar that people use without thinking about it. Want to watch your favorite content creator's videos? YouTube is the only game in town- no thought necessary.

About to underwrite a car loan? There is no thought attached to the credit checks. $FICO gets the bid for its services 90% of the time. It is the industry standard and it is automatic for most.

Need to order something? $AMZN’s platform has it, and they will get it to you faster than anyone else. 1-click purchasing enabled. No need to think about return policies, shipping costs, or time-to-door. There are no questions about the level of hassle involved.

Achieving automaticity in customer behavior is equivalent to achieving godhood in the business world. Few achieve it, but once that hurdle is crossed, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to disrupt it. It's a question of psychological conditioning of consumers just as much as it is one of fundamental strength of the business.

Mercado Libre is positioning for automaticity. Every penny they spend, everything they do, is in pursuit of it. And for all the talk about competition in their regions, no other company is positioning to achieve the same.

The extent to which Mercado Libre is engrained in the daily lives of its customers is underappreciated by market makers. $MELI has touchpoints everywhere on any given day. That's how you build a system of consumer automaticity. The ecosystem is distribution, and distribution is everything. Neither $SE, nor Temu, nor $NU, or even $AMZN has distribution this wide in the daily experience of any given consumer.

Let’s look at an example of what $MELI’s distribution really means on any given day for a Latin American:

Miguel earns a paycheck as a security guard in Brazil. Through direct deposit, 100% of his salary is placed in his Mercado Pago account. He makes sure of this because his deposits are remunerated, which is something he can’t get via traditional banks.

In the morning, he takes the subway to work. He pays with the Mercado Pago app. When he grabs lunch, he does the same.

As he sits and eats, his wife texts him that she needs something for home. Miguel pulls up the marketplace on his phone, orders it, and the product arrives at their front door the same afternoon.

While he was finalizing the purchase, data was used to automatically push two offers to Miguel. 1) There was an option to pay for the product in installments. 2) Miguel was approved for his first credit card, should he want it.

He chooses to accept the credit card and is happy that he doesn't have to pay for the product with cash immediately.

As Miguel is getting ready to go home he remembers that he has to get the grocery shopping done. However, he is running low on time because he was stuck at work late. He navigates to the Supermercado portion of the app and throws together a full cart. He pays with the new credit card and the groceries are delivered in the morning.

As Miguel makes the journey home, he stops in a small shop to pick up a pack of cigarettes. He pays by scanning the Pago QR code next to the register as he's done a hundred times before. He doesn't even think about it.

As Miguel is winding down at home, he wants to stream a show with dinner. He brings up Mercado Play and hits the play button on the show of his choice. It's a no-brainer because it's free and full of great stuff.

As the occasional ad plays, he sees one for the Meli+ service. He likes the idea of no more commercials, free shipping, and the various Mercado Pago perks. And now he has a credit card so, not only is it well worth it, but it'll be easy to pay for it each month. He signs up.

In just one day, Miguel had interactions with Mercado Pago, Mercado Credito, Mercado Marketplace, Mercado Envios, Mercado Play, and Mercado Ads. And it was just a normal day.

He also became a Meli+ subscriber, which further pins him to continuous use of the ecosystem. It will continue to be natural for him.

And that's the point. He doesn't have to think about where or how to do anything he needs. It's zero-thought engagement. It is consumer automaticity deeply engraved in common human behavior.

And that's where the money is.
