Normally, I let 99% of the lies, smears, and distortions written about me go unacknowledged, but one came out today in a disreputable activist publication with a strong political agenda that was so absurd—bordering on comical even, that it demands a response to correct the record.

The smear merchants are, of course, counting on most people to not read beyond their outrageous headline claiming that I pushed “anti-Semitic views” and “downlpayed the Holocaust,” but the facts matter, so I will address them.

This is the only comment I am going to make on this ridiculous article or the subject in general.

(1) While I am a convert to Christianity, I am, in fact, Jewish by birth, and my entire family of origin and no small number of people in my personal and professional circles are Jewish. The author acknowledges my background in the body of the article, but trusts, of course, that most will fixate on the misleading headline. Thus, the notion that I somehow have an animus against Jewish people in general is absurd.

(2) As a Christian I want everyone to embrace the Christian faith, especially my family and friends, because I believe Christianity to be true, and other religions false. Again, this is not a scandal except perhaps in the minds of the author and his editors who evidently believe that standard beliefs held by the vast majority of Christians throughout history are scandalous.

(3) I have never “downplayed” the Holocaust, one of the great horrors of modern history, except in the overactive imagination and perhaps bad faith portrayal of the author.

(4) I have, of course, been very critical of the political activities of much of the establishment Jewish community since most of the community is liberal and I am a conservative. This should surprise nobody, nor is it a scandal. I have also been critical of the extreme neoconservatives such as those who seem to be pushing this hit piece. At the same time, I have been 100 percent supportive of the foreign policy of the Trump administration, the most pro-Israel administration in history. And I have called out by name those who have engaged in extreme anti-Israel conspiracy theories.

In particular, with respect to the position the President nominated me for, I have been very enthusiastic about this administration’s sanctions on the so-called International Criminal Court, which has pursued PM Netanyahu and other members of his government with legally illegitimate “charges.” I have also strongly criticized the UN’s Israel monomania in general.

(5) I am glad that the author acknowledged amidst the “negative” comments that he cherrypicked from hour-long interviews that I repeatedly emphasized that I was “not speaking about all Jewish people” I am also glad the noted that I very pointedly “reject conspiracy theories about the Jewish community as a whole." Of course, these acknowledgements are buried deep in his article.

(6) As the author notes, while I was honored to be nominated by the President as an Assistant Secretary of State, like a number of other nominees for various senior government roles, my nomination expired without a Senate hearing this year. The President has not decided whether he wishes to renominate me and I have not decided whether I wish to seek renomination.

In the immediate wake of this absurd article, I received a note from a good friend who is a very prominent member of the Pro-Israel community, who noted that “this is exactly why antisemitism is rising. Democrats and adjacent actors label anyone they dislike as antisemitic in order to neutralize political opponents. In the process, an environment is created in which real Jew-hatred is no longer treated as a distinct or urgent threat, but as just another partisan accusation.”

I could not have said it better myself.
