Most people chase ANY backlink they can get.

HUGE MISTAKE.

ONE high-quality link beats 100 garbage links.

Here's my complete 12-point checklist for evaluating backlink quality.

(Save this - you'll reference it constantly) 🧵
2
1/ Domain Authority Check

First filter:

- DR/DA above 20
- Real traffic (check Semrush)
- Active website
- Updated within last 6 months

✅ DR 35, 10k monthly traffic
❌ DR 50, 0 traffic (likely manipulated)
3
2/ Traffic Relevance

The link source should:

- Target YOUR audience
- Be in your niche or adjacent
- Drive relevant traffic
- Have overlapping keywords

✅ Marketing blog linking to your SEO tool
❌ Random pet blog linking to your SaaS
4
3/ Link Type Matters

Quality hierarchy:

🏆 Editorial link in content body
👍 Author bio link
😐 Footer/sidebar link
❌ Comment section link

Where the link sits determines its value.
5
4/ Context is Everything

Strong signals:

- Link appears naturally in sentence
- Surrounded by relevant content
- Anchor text makes sense
- Links to relevant page

Red flags:

- Random link dump section
- "Sponsored" or "Partner" tags
- Irrelevant anchor text
6
5/ Check the Neighborhood

Look at other outbound links:

✅ Links to authority sites
✅ Relevant resources
✅ Editorial picks

❌ Links to sketchy sites
❌ Obvious link schemes
❌ Casino/pharma spam

You're judged by the company you keep.
7
6/ Anchor Text Quality

Natural anchor text:

- Brand name
- URL
- Descriptive phrase
- Related keyword variation

Spammy anchor text:

- Exact match keyword stuffing
- Commercial anchors only
- Same anchor from multiple sites
8
7/ Page Authority Check

The linking PAGE matters more than domain:

- Does the page rank for anything?
- Does it get organic traffic?
- Is there quality content?
- Multiple internal links to it?

Strong page + strong domain = gold.
9
8/ Link Placement Position

Where in the content?

🏆 Top third of article (best)
👍 Middle section (good)
😐 Bottom/conclusion (meh)

Earlier placement = more value.
10
9/ Content Quality Assessment

The linking content must be:

- Well-written
- Comprehensive
- Actually helpful
- Indexed by Google
- Getting organic traffic

If the content sucks, the link is worthless.
11
10/ Spam Score Check

Use Moz or Ahrefs:

- Spam score under 5% ✅
- Spam score 5-30% ⚠️
- Spam score over 30% ❌

High spam score = potential penalty risk.
12
11/ Link Velocity Red Flags

Check the site's backlink profile:

✅ Steady, natural growth
⚠️ Sudden spikes
❌ Links from same network
❌ All links acquired same month

Natural link building looks organic.
13
12/ The Manual Gut Check

Finally, ask yourself:

- Would I cite this site?
- Does this site have real users?
- Is this content actually useful?
- Would Google approve?

If any answer is "no" → skip the link.
14
Remember:

Quality > Quantity ALWAYS.

100 garbage links = potential penalty

10 quality links = rankings boost

Be selective. Be strategic.

Your rankings will thank you.
