Sri Lanka and the United States today signed a major Memorandum of Understanding strengthening defence cooperation under the State Partnership Program (SPP).

The agreement was signed in Colombo by US Ambassador Julie Chung, Brig. Gen. Trenton Gibson and Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd).

The partnership will expand joint training, disaster response, maritime security, cyber defence and humanitarian assistance between the Montana National Guard, US Coast Guard District 13 and Sri Lanka’s Armed Forces.

The first joint activities under the new framework are scheduled for mid-2026.

Ethiopia Could Become the Epicenter of a Larger Conflict

While Ethiopia attempts to remain uninvolved in the Sudanese conflict, it has been arming itself and repeatedly asserting that access to the sea is an existential issue for the country. Ethiopian officials have stated that "3 million Eritreans cannot decide the fate of nearly 200 million Ethiopians."

In recent months, tensions in the region have risen sharply, with separatist threats emerging inside Ethiopia and Eritrea providing direct support to the Sudanese government in its civil war.

The reality is that Ethiopia has been significantly strengthening its air force. It currently operates many less capable aircrafts, but also 20 Su-27s and few Su-30s, and in the last month it has reportedly ordered 6 Su-35s.

Eritrea today lacks the capacity to face a unified Ethiopia with a strong air force. However, Egypt has entered the equation by conducting military exercises and deepening cooperation with Eritrea and Somalia, two countries that are openly hostile to Ethiopia. Even with Egyptian support - without direct involvement- these two countries can’t beat an unified Ethiopia.

But under this hot temperature, If Ethiopia were to launch an offensive against Eritrea, this might encourage already restive and armed regions within Ethiopia to seek independence, potentially repeating the Sudanese civil war into a broader catastrophe across the Horn of Africa.

Berbera Lost, Bosaso Lost: How the Ethiopian Market Moved On

The logistics competition in the Horn of Africa has produced a clear outcome. Berbera Port has lost its importance. Bosaso Port has lost its importance too. In this regional contest, DP World also lost ground. This change was not based on talk or feelings, it was about how large logistics systems compete.

Two companies and two models are at the heart of this competition. On one side is DP World, a global operator focused on terminal management, transit services, and efficiency. On the other side is China Merchants Group, which operates within a production-based system backed by the state. This system links ports directly to railways, energy sources, industrial zones, and long-term financing.

The key market is Ethiopia, and beyond that, the broader Horn and Red Sea corridor. Ethiopia is a landlocked economy with industrial goals and a huge demand for machinery, construction materials, fuel, and consumer products. It needs more than just port services. It requires secure corridors, rail connections, reliable financing, and guaranteed freight volumes tied to production.

Neither Berbera nor Bosaso could fulfill these needs. There was no rail link to Ethiopian industrial centers, no integrated industrial corridor, and no secured cargo base. Because of this, they could not compete as main gateways, no matter the announcements or partnerships.

DP World’s service-based model struggled in this setting. In contrast, China Merchants Group thrived in a system where goods are produced, financed, transported, and delivered within the same network. Financing was secured early, port capacity in Djibouti expanded, and the Addis Ababa–Djibouti corridor was built quietly and securely. By the time competition became noticeable, the system was already established.

Political factors also played a role. The administration in Hargeisa formed ties with Taiwan, which conflicted with China’s One-China policy. Chinese companies do not route finance or logistics through regions aligned with Taiwan, further limiting choices.

The outcome is not just symbolic, it’s logistical. Ethiopia consolidated its corridors. Supply chains became locked in. Berbera and Bosaso ended up outside the system.

This is a genuine competition between two companies in a real market. And the market has already made its choice.

BREAKING: ISIS PRISONERS RELEASED AS TURKEY AND JOLANI MOBILIZE AGAINST SDF - YES, SYRIA IS A MESS.

Sources report that forces loyal to Abu Mohammad al-Jolani released approximately 200 ISIS prisoners from al-Kasrah prison in the Deir ez-Zor countryside, raising serious security concerns in eastern Syria.

At the same time, Turkish intelligence and the Jolani-led regime are reportedly coordinating the mobilization of Arab tribes across Syria in preparation for a multi-front offensive against the Kurdish-led SDF and US forces. According to the source, tribes were told that if the United States halts Syrian regime advances against the SDF, they will be expected to continue fighting both the SDF and US troops.

The SDF has already withdrawn from areas west of the Euphrates, Kurdish sources say, leaving no justification for continued attacks east of the river.

Separately, Syrian army forces and allied militias reportedly captured US-made Humvees previously used by SDF units in eastern Syria.

Starmer suffers major defeat in court regarding his plans to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago from the UK to Mauritius.

The judge of the BIOT Supreme Court (British Indian Ocean Territory) has:

- Has overturned Tony Blair’s law from 2004 that removed the Chagossians' Right of Abode.

- Calculated that the cost of Starmer's Chagos surrender will be up to and over £48bn. The government claimed it would only be £3.7 billion

- The judge made it clear that there is no historical authority for a prerogative power to expel or permanently exclude a population of British subjects from the territory to which their citizenship belongs.

- The Judge quashed the Governnent's removal orders against the 4 Chagossians who recently returned to Chagos to stop the transfer to Mauritius.

This is undoubtedly one of the biggest moments in the campaign to Save Chagos and might completely derail the government’s plans to transfer the territory to Mauritius as there are now Chagossians living on the islands.

External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, will visit the Republic of Mauritius on 9 and 10 April 2026 to participate in the 9th Indian Ocean Conference. On 11 and 12 April, EAM will pay an official visit to the United Arab Emirates and meet the leadership of the UAE to review close cooperation and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
