🧵+972 article claims Israel killed only 8,900 combatants branding all others civilians. But piece admits those are only NAMED fighters. The fact that Israel has identified so many by name is remarkable. Pretending this proves the IDF didn't kill 20,000+ combatants is absurd. 1/

The article of course elevates Hamas data as accurate, ignoring that it includes natural deaths, deaths caused by Hamas, child combatants and numerous other anomalies. It also falsely asserts Israel accepts the Hamas data even though Israel said it officially does not. 2/

As usual for +972, it elevates anonymous and unofficial IDF sources, but buries the official statements from identified sources that contradict their entire thesis. They make much that the first response by the IDF was vague, but then later specifically disputed the data. END

You're going to see a lot of tweets over the next 24 hours about the 83% number.

It is — like so many of the other narratives spread about Gaza — completely bogus.

In fact, the article actually debunks itself🧵

Further official statement by IDF stating that the +972/Guardian piece is false:

Full IDF Statement:

The figures presented in the article are incorrect and do not reflect the data available in the IDF’s systems.

Throughout the war, continuous intelligence assessments are conducted regarding the number of terrorists eliminated in the Gaza Strip, based on BDA methodologies and cross-checking efforts from various sources. One of the sources of information cross-referenced is documents originating from terrorist organizations in the Strip.

The IDF is a professional military that operates according to operational methods accepted by many armies worldwide — the claims presented in the article are not only false but also reflect a fundamental lack of military understanding.

According to propagandists @972mag @guardian
@yuval_abraham @_EmmaGH if a combatant killed is not specifically NAMED, even in midst of war, they are a civilian. A new standard just for Israel. My view: assuming 8,900 are identified by name, it helps corroborate 20,000+ killed.

The "83%" lie is going viral. Here's how to shut it down, fast.

@972mag @guardian @yuval_abraham @_EmmaGH A commenter pointed to the IDF’s list of 47,653 named militants as if that proves anything. So what. The IDF doesn’t have every body of combatants killed. When they strike Hamas cells in tunnels, or an RPG squad, or IED planter, etc. they may only know a fraction of the names.

@972mag @guardian @yuval_abraham @_EmmaGH Author @yuval_abraham claims Hamas' fatality number is undercounted because of "bodies under the rubble" (often estimated ~10,000) which inadvertently concedes that many combatants killed are unnamed. Thus claiming only 8,900 total combatants killed by the IDF is flatly wrong.

@972mag @guardian @yuval_abraham @_EmmaGH Another excellent point missed by the authors: according to many reports, Hamas has recruited many 1000s of new fighters, which would NOT be on any IDF list. Any of these fighters killed in last months would necessarily not be part of the 8,900 named fatalities. h/t @zzDiklazz
