Here’s the thing. This woman is higher IQ than her husband, even though she’s the one making a fool of herself. She’s actually trying to figure out what’s happening, while he dumbly states, “It’s a mirror, honey.”

Second, it’s a cool demonstration of optics and diffraction. My guess is that average Americans have become so demented that their “go to” explanation would be demon possession, as opposed to, say, looking up an old episode of “Mr. Wizard.”

The response of the child is equally fascinating. Unlike his dumb dad, he offers an explanation and not a description: “There’s a camera in the mirror.”

Previously, men would try to figure something out through science or pragmatic tinkering or trial and error. Younger generations simply make recourse to technology that they don’t understand and that is effectively “magical.”

For instance, 50 years ago, if someone were at a magic show, and wondered “how’d he do that?”, he might suggest a hidden mirror or misdirection or slight-of-hand—something physical. Today, if a young person watches a magic trick on YouTube, he’s likely to suggest: “That was CGI!” or “That was AI!” On some level, it marks a total dissociation from the physical world.
