this was the moment that "being a person with ideas" was subsumed into a movement of "people who ARE their ideas."
a person with ideas can respect another person with ideas even when some of the ideas are different.
but a person who IS their ideas and derives their sense of self externally from them cannot. any disagreement with their belief set is taken as personal attack. this is a primary feature of externally validated identity. any attempt to implement ideas different that one's chosen doctrine feels like erasure.
this is why such people wind up behaving like jihadis. the world becomes pure "us vs them" against anyone not in the tribe. it's adoption forced homogenization of ideas to the point where knowing someone's stance on abortion near flawlessly predicts their stance on global warming, welfare, trans, school funding, ukraine, and 50 other things. no cross cutting cleavages. dissent is not tolerated.
this broke DC which used to function on backchannels. the congress critters fought on the floor all day, but their staffers all went out drinking together at night, donkey and elephant alike. that ended under obama and the bars segregated like crips and bloods. commonality and the knowledge sharing and ability to work together that was once present.
it broke society too and the endless attacks on "anything not just like us" from the left wound up isolating them into one of the most intense echo chambers i have ever seen. it was both self-selected and external imposed as everyone simply got tired of talking to them and left. now they have no idea that the landscape that they inhabit has become mostly hallucination.
some were awakened by the election and how wrong all their news was, but the other half got twice as devout and are now doubling down again on their ideologies.
they are in for a rough next several years, but their group will keep getting smaller and smaller and less and less relevant as each new ratchet of intensity make it harder to keep the illusion alive and renders those enthralled by it ever more intolerable to be around and ever more unable to function.
their views were never popular, they were just good at making it seem that way. and those days are over.
