In 1986, George Soros traveled to Beijing to launch an NGO. Within two years, Chinese spies controlled the entire organization.

It was a test run.

Chinese spies used the "Soros Incident"—their words—as a model to build a vast espionage machine in America.

It gets crazier. 🧵

China has built an enormous fifth column inside of America.

They lobby Congress. They influence state and local governments. They build media organizations. They influence universities and think tanks, pressure businesses, and recruit agents from the Chinese diaspora.

In the thread below, we explained how this fifth column operates.

China uses a strategy it calls the "united front": They cultivate the loyalty of politicians, businessmen, and members of the Chinese diaspora within America—and then use them as a decentralized spy network.

This week, the former deputy chief of staff for New York Gov. Kathy Hochul was charged as a Chinese spy.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Over the past few decades, China has established a vast fifth column in American society.

This goes much deeper than you think. 🧵

This strategy is even more nefarious than it seems.

The Ministry of State Security—China's most important intelligence organization—uses the united front as a cover for its influence operations.

All of this was revealed by @alexjoske in his excellent book: Spies and Lies.

Joske begins in 1986. George Soros was determined to promote liberalization in China, just like he had in Europe.

So Soros partnered with the Economic System Reform Institute—a hub of Chinese progressive thinkers—to create the China Fund.

But the CCP didn't want to be reformed.

The CCP forced ESRI to cut ties with Soros and put a new organization in charge of Soros' China Fund: The China International Culture Exchange Center.

Soros got along well with CICEC's head, Yu Enguang. Enguang provided Soros with high-level access to the Chinese ruling class.

But Enguang wasn't who he claimed to be.

His real name was Yu Fang. He was one of China's top intelligence officers—and he was using Soros to shape how Americans saw China.

Soros' misadventure in China provided China's MSS with a playbook to run influence operations in America.

In the 90s, US leaders were desperate to prove that China was a friendly nation that wanted to democratize and liberalize.

The Clinton administration, in particular, lobbied Congress to open America to China.

China, they argued, would only change once we opened up to them.

But that wasn't the only reason they wanted PNTR.

PNTR was good for China too. It would, Albright argued, "only help the human rights and political situation in China."

Giving China unlimited access to American markets was supposed to transform them into a liberal democracy.

CICEC was quick to exploit this.

They partnered with a US non-profit that wanted to improve relations with China: the US-China Policy Foundation.

The Foundation invited Chinese "scholars" to speak to policymakers. Fang spoke at the National Press Club—under his false identity.

Fang was not the only spy to speak to American leaders.

Lin Di—another top Chinese spy—was also invited to the National Press Club by US-China Policy Foundation.

In his speech, he promised American leaders that China was "deepening her reform."

But he was lying.

CICEC was far from the only organization that Chinese spies controlled.

In 1994, the China Reform Forum was founded as a launch pad for Chinese influence operations.

Within a decade, presidential administrations were parroting talking points fed to them by Chinese spies.

In 2003, Zheng Bijian, recruited by Chinese intelligence to be the public face of China Reform Forum, gave a widely-covered speech in Beijing.

Bijian declared that China only wanted a "peaceful" path to power.

It was a message American elites had been waiting to hear.

American foreign policy experts immediately celebrated the speech.

Foreign Affairs quickly published a version of it—in the article, Bijian confirmed American hopes: "China does not seek hegemony."

Instead, China wanted a "peaceful rise" where it could assume its natural place.

American leaders seized upon the idea of "China's peaceful rise."

Robert Zoellick—Condoleezza Rice's deputy—cited it to argue that Americans needed to "foster" China's power.

It was a watershed moment for Chinese intelligence. They were directly driving American foreign policy.

This influence operation continues today.

As late as September 2022, John Podesta—the famous Democrat operative—was serving on the steering committee for the US-China Exchange Foundation.

USCEF is a "united front" group.

@SenTedCruz described its influence as "insidious."

Today, Podesta is in charge of overseeing the Inflation Reduction Act's tax credits program.

As it just so happens, Chinese solar companies are getting billions of dollars in credits from the IRA.

All while Podesta flies to Beijing to meet with Chinese leaders.

Now, @compactmag confirms our fears: Chinese solar firms are exploiting these credits to expand their dominance—using US taxpayer dollars.

As the report shows, Chinese solar firms are building low value plants in America—giving them access to dollars they invest back in China.

Stories like these are why Tim Walz's ties to China are notable.

It doesn't mean that Walz himself is a spy.

But the Chinese government giving Walz's students "special status" and money?

...we've seen this movie before.

@America_2100
America 2100@America_2100
In 1994, Tim Walz was teaching social studies at a Nebraska high school. This is a news story from a local paper.

"Walz always has been fascinated by Communist China. He remembers from his childhood pictures of Mao Tse-tung, hung in public places and carried in parades."

Americans built the modern world.

Our ancestors settled a continent, conquered a frontier, and sent men to the moon.

But that American genius has been sold off for parts—piece by piece—over the past 50 years.

This is a choice. It doesn't have to be this way.
