China, drugs & Golden triangle of Asia

Drug running is a money turner for countries. Especially, for those who want to become a superpower. Opium war was all about that. That was British. Then, it was US and drug cartels of Americas. This time, it is China.

Introducing: Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ)

Location: Laos - Myanmar - Thailand trijunction.

It is a 39Sq Kms of land leased for 99 yrs to a Chinese man.

Who is the Chinese man?

Meet Zhao Wei.

Hails from North China. Shifted to Macau. Learnt Casino business. Black to white of drug money.

His mission: To convert drug money to white and get it into financial system.
Media image
4
Why is Zhao Wei important?

He has been listed as most wanted by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for transnational crimes including drug trafficking and human trafficking.
5
A UNODC report observes, “One of the most notorious of these facilities is the Golden Triangle SEZ in Lao PDR that contains the Kings Romans casino complex, owned by a Hong Kong, China, registered company with a 99-year lease.”
6
Zhao Wei is also sanctioned by US Treasury department on 30th January 2018

8
Malaysia experiences high levels of labour-related irregular migration, particularly from Indonesia
and the Philippines as well as from Myanmar & Bangladesh.

(As per UNODC report)
9
Wherever Chinese go, they open a casino. From there on, starts the colonization effort and funding PRC efforts.

So, why are casinos important piece of puzzle in Chinese economy and power struggle?

Casinos do one job. Just one key part.

Fund PRC in any ways possible.
10
Fund PRC? Yes, fund it through drugs, arms smuggling, human trafficking and what not!

Now, you know how glossy effect is attained in Chinese cities.

Why just this? Even in Africa, they do this. Chinese run Casinos are a big problem in countries neighboring China.

(To be contd)

This one by Manipur CM talks about the threat Golden Triangle poses to India.

@NBirenSingh
N. Biren Singh@NBirenSingh
As the gatekeeper of our nation's eastern border, adjacent to the infamous Golden Triangle (Dead Triangle)—one of the world's most notorious drug trade routes—I have a responsibility to protect our country from the scourge of drugs. With about 1.5 lakh youths affected by drugs in Manipur alone, this battle is more urgent than ever. Illegal immigrants from Myanmar are not only crossing into India unlawfully but are also contributing to the destruction of our youth.

My fight against drugs will continue and intensify under the guidance of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji and Hon’ble HM Shri @AmitShah Ji. I urge the nation to wake up and join me in this critical battle to safeguard our future.

💡👀 In 2022, I closely followed and reported on the Myanmar coup, leveraging my contacts and stringers in Myanmar who work with international organizations. For example, I had detailed conversations with a contact in Myanmar that year about this incident back then. (See the attached video)

During the crisis, tech professionals from India and other ASEAN countries were stranded in the Myawaddy forests (under the guise of being employed), located in the southeastern region of Myanmar near the Thailand border.

This situation also highlights the disconnection between the people of Tamil Nadu and events in the rest of the country, as well as the role of the Central government (BJP or INC) in the nation’s welfare. The Indian government did a lot leveraging their closeness with the Junta to rescue Indians. A majority of the Indians were from Andhra and Tamilnadu.

Political leaders in Tamil Nadu often portray the state as being better off without being a part of India. I wish they knew more about all of this!

HM: "I've given clear orders to agencies. If a consignment of drugs is caught at port, track who is the end consumer / dealer. If a consignment is caught at street with dealer, track up the supply chain."

Why do you think, we started our anti-Drugs war 10yrs ago? Think.

1/2
19
Few questions. Ask yourself.
1. Why is it that the drugs being busted are pretty huge these days?
2. Why some industries which thrived on drugs, are now cracked & brought to their knees?

2/3
20
Answer is simple.

Higher echelons of power have very deep understanding of #GoldenTriangle & the way cartels operate. Years before Manipur was in news, GoI started working on it. Few very good souls were at work & have spilt blood & sweat to get to where we are right now.
21
While appointing New Governors, GoI just cemented its position and literally saying, we're digging in and here to stay.

Bringing back AK Bhalla was a brilliant one. Always knew Gen VK Singh is up to something BIG.

Target is not just BD. But, #GoldenTriangle too.

22
Looking at the moves, we're in for some kind of event.

Hypothetically, even if the chicken's neck is 'cut off', we still have a retired Army Chief and retired Home Secretary there. This is just for the starters.

Good luck, adversaries. More to follow on #GoldenTriangle

In Tak’s Mae Sot district, acting on a tip-off, authorities searched a cargo truck near the second Friendship Bridge, discovering several litres of fuel in tanks, hidden inside the vehicle.

The Burmese driver said he had purchased the fuel for 8,000 baht to resell in Myanmar.

@MEAIndia From inside Myanmar, this is the situation

@ThaiEnquirer
Thai Enquirer@ThaiEnquirer
Myanmar netizens said the group protesting against Thailand's electricity, fuel, and internet cuts, and calling for a ban on Thai products at the 1st Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge this morning, were not locals from Myawaddy but supporters of the junta.

One user explained that while many Thai people may be upset by the protests and calls for product bans, they want Thai people to understand that most Myanmar people don’t want to take part. The protest was mainly driven by the military or powerful families and was not voluntary—it’s an order from those in power. Most people in the affected areas don’t want conflict with Thailand, as they know Thailand is not their enemy. They are grateful for the help Thailand has provided, especially during floods and other crises. The user emphasized that the actions of a few groups should not be seen as representing all of Myanmar.

Another user pointed out that one of the protest leaders is from the State Administration Council (SAC), and locals did not join the protest because they understand the issues are caused by the junta and the Border Guard Forces (BGF), who control the area. The user added that Myanmar people don’t blame the Thai government for the cuts.

Another user said the protest leaders were paid by the junta and the BGF to organize the protests. Since the coup, only the junta and its affiliates can organize such protests in areas they control.

Another user said that under the law, protests need approval from local authorities. These days, only military supporters are allowed to hold protests that align with the military's interests, often funded by the military or groups like the BGF. Regular civilians know who to blame.

@MEAIndia Thaksin on UWSA.
@ThaiEnquirer
Thai Enquirer@ThaiEnquirer
Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra identified Myanmar’s Shan State—especially areas controlled by the United Wa State Army (UWSA)—as the main source of drugs entering Thailand. He suggested Thai authorities should be allowed to intervene there under international rules.

UWSA

Speaking at the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, with relevant ministers in attendance, Thaksin said drug production is now concentrated in UWSA-controlled areas, whereas it used to be spread across the region. Although traffickers cross borders to avoid arrest, their drug networks remain active inside Thailand. He called those involved in the drug trade enemies of the state and stressed the need for urgent action.

He explained that the UWSA has grown stronger and gained advanced equipment—reportedly from China—which helps them produce drugs in larger quantities. Even though Thailand has improved drug enforcement and seized more drugs, production in the region keeps increasing. Thaksin said Thailand needs to work closely with China to break the supply chain.

Thaksin criticized some officials for not doing enough and said old drug-fighting methods no longer work. He also warned about weak checks at sea ports, where about six million shipping containers enter Thailand each year but few are x-rayed. He claimed some containers are purposely left unchecked and pointed to chemicals coming from Cambodia to Laem Chabang Port as a serious threat.

He called for stronger talks with neighboring countries and said if Myanmar cannot shut down drug labs in UWSA areas, Thailand should be allowed to step in under international law. He added that drug operations relying on Thai electricity or communication should be cut off. He also said that anyone who refuses to help fight drugs should be seen as supporting the traffickers.

Thaksin urged the foreign minister to work more closely with regional partners in the coming months and improve intelligence to find drug labs and track drug routes.

Overhaul

He also said Thailand’s drug-fighting strategy needs a major update because current efforts are weak and uncoordinated.

He said that poor coordination among 29 agencies causes inefficiency because of overlapping duties and budget issues. He suggested using modern management, clear responsibilities, and performance reviews to fix this.

Thaksin stressed that police, civil authorities, and local officials must work better together. He urged provincial governors, district chiefs, and police superintendents to cooperate more closely. He proposed seizing assets and prosecuting known traffickers and asked for permission to inspect drug hotspots and report to the interior minister. He noted some big drug figures remain untouched and suggested replacing officials who don’t cooperate while encouraging informal meetings to rebuild trust.

About the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), which has a yearly budget of 7 billion baht (3 billion for southern border provinces), he said the agency must show clear results in fighting drugs and securing borders. He warned that if it fails, its continued existence would be hard to justify.

Finally, Thaksin responded to criticism of his administration’s war on drugs by denying that 2,000 people were killed. He said only 70 to 80 deaths were related to drugs and that his operations were legal but firm.
