the past month or so has been super illuminating in terms of internal democratic factional politics. of the two parties, the democrats have long seemed to be the more enigmatic, with internal party machinations impenetrable to outside observers x.com/eigenrobot/sta…

i suspect the democratic party is much more machine-like than it outwardly presents. broadcast and then social media obscured the fact that if smoke-filled rooms ceased to exist, it was only because the rooms themselves were no longer physically required
3
based on recent drama, it seems like the Big Three democrat power centers seem to be the NorCal clique, Chicago (Obama) and New York (Clinton) it turns out Biden failed to create an independent power base around his inner circle, which partly explains his unceremonious dumping
4
Kamala is implicitly a protege of the NorCal clique, but i can't shake the feeling that she wasn't supposed to get this far and now it's a bit awkward for the aristocratic families behind the scene who are stuck with her while Newsom's clock slowly ticks down
5
this is a good frame to analyze the vp pick. as the nyt pointed out a few days ago, Shapiro is definitely an Obama guy. he was also prob acceptable to Clinton world despite his bucking of the pennsylvania establishment to support Obama in 2008
6
this is probably what made him unpalatable to NorCal which collectively has to be looking through to 2028 and beyond. also, as has been pointed out in many places, he is obviously opposed by the Left which is associated with bernie and the aoc squad but lacks a power center
7
this might be the most interesting takeaway of the Walz pick. it's a cold-shoulder to obama world while elevating the Left to potentially make the Big Three into a Big Four. Minnesota has a long history of socialist politics, voting blue in defiance of Nixon and Reagan landslides
8
we will see what happens, but if this is the vision then what we should see is Walz being elevated during the campaign as an almost equal partner of Harris. expect many appearances highlighting the support of the Squad and an attempt to finally pass the torch from bernie sanders
9
at best this election is a coinflip so what might be even more important is to lay the groundwork so that thist faction can maintain a national power base past the election. this means the typical patronage and machine politics structures
10
this is something that recently has been hard for the Left to do as all their charismatic leaders have been in legislative not executive roles. traditionally unions have served this role but the landscape has shifted and this is one way for the Left to progress beyond activism
